"Incident: Arkefly B763 over Atlantic on Jan 13th 2010, unruly passenger

An Arkefly Boeing 767-300, registration PH-MCL performing flight OR-361 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Aruba (Aruba) with 231 passengers and 11 crew, was enroute about 210nm northwest of Shannon (Ireland) already over the Atlantic, when the crew requested to return and divert to Shannon due to an unruly passenger on board. The airplane landed safely in Shannon about 40 minutes later.

Police arrested a Dutch male (44), who was travelling alone and had started to act aggressively, then made threats and finally claimed a bomb was on board.

The airplane is currently on the ground and is being searched."

BMI had an incident on the 10th of Jan:

"A BMI British Midland Airbus A320-200, registration G-MEDH performing flight BD-894 from Moscow Domodedovo (Russia) to London Heathrow,EN (UK), was enroute overhead Holland, when a male drunk passenger began to shout and attempted to start a fight. The crew decided to divert to Amsterdam, where the airplane landed safely, the passenger was taken into custody.

The airplane reached London with a delay of 2 hours."

And Air India:

"An Air India Airbus A320-200, flight IC-537 from Dubai (United Arab Emirates) to Kozhikode (India), diverted to Mumbai (India) due to an unruly passenger on board. The airplane landed safely, the passenger was taken into custody.

The airplane departed again after one hour on the ground and reached Kozhikode with a delay of 3 hours.

Air India reported, that the drunk male "misbehaved" with a female passenger sitting next to him.

Police reported, that no case has been registered yet."

And Westjet:

A Westjet Boeing 737-600, registration C-GWCQ performing flight WS-505 from Montreal,QC to Vancouver,BC (Canada), was enroute at FL380 about half way into the flight south of Winnipeg,MB (Canada), when cabin crew caught a passenger smoking in the lavatory. The passenger was given a warning. An hour later cabin crew again spotted the passenger smoking in the lavatory, the flight attendants confirmed that there were cigarette ashes in the sink. The crew requested law enforcement to meet the aircraft at the gate in Vancouver and landed safely about 90 minutes later.

Police did not press charges due to lack of physical evidence, however discovered, that an arrest warrant was outstanding for the passenger. A joint was found on him as well. Police therefore took the passenger into custody.

Lets see there were nine of these in the last week.  All but one seems to alcohol related. It tops the list of reasons for diversions. 

I guess we aren't in Kansas any more....
