Gaithersburg, Md (WUSA) --- A small plane crashed south of the Montgomery County Airpark around 1:45 p.m. Sunday.

The plane is down in the area of Mallory Pl and Snouffers School Rd.

Initial reports from police and witnesses indicate that the pilot is safely out. The plane is reported to be a Cirrus SR22 which had a parachute that deployed.

Let the media confusion begin....

http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Pilot-Crashes-Plane-Into-Gaithersburg-Neighborhood.html

The pilot, who escaped the plane by parachute, has been taken to the hospital.

(makes it sound like he jumped with a parachute...not that the Cirrus has a PLANE parachute)....heh, I wouldn't have thought they could bungle THAT up.

I've flown in and out of Gaithersburg. My brother-in-law is a Staff Sargent in the U.S. Army 82 Airborne. He was injured in Iraq. Angel Flight was nice enough to fly him home for Christmas two years ago. I was the chosen one to perform the Cabin Attendant duties!  :-) We departed Gaithersbug (KGAI) and flew to Jackson, MI (KJXN) on a Beech Bonanza (B-35A I think). Nice airport. Made the return trip shortly after New Years.

Sad about the crash. Yes, that news clip does make it sound like he opened the door and jumped out!
