Another strong storm has developed and will be pushing through the Northeast US on Sunday, December 23.   For feeds such as Buffalo (KBUF), Boston (KBOS), JFK (KJFK), Syracuse (KSYR) and Rochester (KROC), forecasts are calling for strong surface winds and low level windshear, thunderstorms, heavy rain, and blowing snow later in the day.

Here is Buffalo's Terminal Area Forecast (TAF) for Sunday, 12/23, into Monday:

     FM1400 17025G35KT 6SM -SHRA OVC035 WS020/18070KT(1)
     FM1800 18025G35KT 5SM -SHRA OVC035
     TEMPO 1819 19030G50KT(2)   3SM TSRA OVC020CB
     FM2300 25035G52KT(3)4SM -SHSN BLSN OVC035

(1)  This translates to windshear at 2000 feet, winds out of the south at 70 knots!   That is one strong wind that low to the ground.

(2)  This translates to winds out of the south at 30 knots gusting to 50 knots.

(3)  Winds out of the southwest at 35 knots, gusting to 52 knots.   In my experience I have learned that the actual winds at Buffalo typically are stronger than the TAF forecasts when the winds align with Lake Erie, as they are forecast to do by 23z on Sunday (6pm local time)

If you are at your computer on Sunday, consider listening to one of the feeds in the Northeast US.  There's bound to be some interesting listening.

My sister is flying out of BDL at noon Sunday (SWA 3149) with a 1 hr connection at MDW on the way to SAN (SWA 1188). Hopefully it won't be too bad.

Hey Peter,

I was listening in on BUF at work eariler today when that 70 knot wind was reported. An AWAC CRJ reported a wind of 70 knots out of 180 at 1500AGL. He subsequently reported 50 knot winds also out of the south at 500 AGL. This was at 1PM local (1800Z). The controller's response was quite funny and so was the conversation after the CRJ landed.

I was listening around 4pm today to the SYR feed when I caught a similar exchange and ended up posting the clip to the Audio Clips forum, given that those wind speeds at low altitude are relatively rare in the Northeast US.
