NWA 747-400s Being Painted In Delta Colors
« on: February 21, 2009, 05:46:15 PM »
Just wondered what u all think of the Northwest/Delta merger. Delta airlines has started painting Northwest equipment in Deltas newest colors. I think seeing the 747-400 in Delta colors will take some getting used to, as the B747 hasnt been in Delta colors since the mid 1970s'. Delta operated the 100 series for a short while, but opted for the L-1011 insted.

The first link is B747-451 N665US in Delta colors, but operating as Northwest.

The second link is Delta B747-132 N9897 in old school widget Delta colors. This was taken in 1974 at KMIA.

Just curious what you guys all think...

The should have gone for the pink Song colors...now that'd be opposite of bland.

That was my thought...for some reason the new Delta colors dont look right on the -400. I think the titles are too small, too much white paint....

A funny note on this whole merger: a friend of mine flies the 747-400 for Northwest. He says when they operate one of the 747s' that have been painted in Delta colors, it's a full-on Northwest flight. NWA crew, cabin and flight. They even use "Northwest" as their callsign. But they have to say "Northwest ### Heavy, in Delta Colors." That way other airplanes and tower know what they are looking for! :-D

ahhh delta livery is so boring. plain, boring, plain and even more plain.

at least NWA with the circle stood out a little more, but still it was plain also.

as a matter of fact more and more airlines are going plain. must be plain sailing ahead.

Delta is also painting DC-9 aircraft in new colors. Seems odd to hold on to an aging fleet of DC-9s! I would have thought Delta would retire the DC-9 fleet...on the other hand, they are bought and paid for! Below is a link to a pic of NWA DC-9-51 N760NC in Delta colors. This aircraft was originally with North Central, then Republic, then Northwest, and finally Delta. Oddly enough...all through mergers!

The A330-232X is also getting the work over. It's kinda strange to see airplanes in Delta Colors (or any colors for that matter) that were never operated by the airline. Below is a pic of NWA A330-232X N801NW in Delta colors.

  http://www.airliners.net/photo/Delta-Air-Lines/Airbus-A330-323X/1468873/L/&tbl=photo_info&photo_nr=14&sok=WHERE__%28aircraft_generic_LIKE_%27Airbus%25%27%29_AND_%28airline_LIKE_%27Delta_Air_Lines%25%27%29_&sort=_order_by_photo_id_DESC_&prev_id=1468976&next_id=1466435

Up until now, the only Airbus types in the Delta fleet were the A310-221, A310-222, and A-310-324. All were acquired when Pan Am went under. Below is a pic of A310-324 N812PA in the old Delta widget colors, with a Pan Am reg #.

I flew Delta this past week and the in the back of the Delta magazine they list both the 747 and the A-330 as being in their fleet and painted in the Delta colors.  I did not see any 747s at ATL though.

whats even funnier....they are required to say that to centers and tracons as well.

last time i looked on my scope...they were all blue dots....didn't matter their paint job :)

A friend of mine is actually a Captain for Northwest. He was flying the A-330, and just went back to the 747-400. He holds Captains type rating in both types. He says for now, since they are still NWA flights, but in Delta colors, most of the 747-400 activity is still in KDTW and KMSP serving Asia, and some of Europe. After the merger in complete, a big chunk of 747-400 activity will move to KATL, serving destinations like PHNL, and several European cities. The A330, 777, and 767 will handle cities served out of KDTW and KMSP. Delta also plans on downsizing it's mainline service at KCVG, but Comair will continue to be a big player there.

I found this vid on youtube. They painted the NWA 747-400 fleet at KVIC (Victorcille CA). This is a time lapse showing the transformation. Pretty cool!  8-)

Ever wonder what an A330-232X would look like in Delta colors? Wonder no more! Here is the latest NWA fleet member to be painted in Delta colors:

 http://www.airliners.net/photo/Delta-Air-Lines/Airbus-A330-323X/1503827/L/&tbl=&photo_nr=13&sok=&sort=&prev_id=1503880&next_id=1503817

NWA A330-232X N806NW landing at AMS/EHAM on 03/22/09.  8-)

As a native Detroiter, I'm going to be sad to see NWA disappear. But I guess that's evolution!

call me old fashioned, but i like the old-old paint scheme that delta used.  the one from the 1974 pic up there.  i dont know why, but something appealing about it!  lol

Couldn't agree more! I LOVE the old paint schemes!

Deltas' "Widget" as it was called was a classic. Looked GREAT on the B747 and the L-1011:
http://www.airliners.net/photo/Delta-Air-Lines/Lockheed-L-1011-385-3-TriStar/1499605/L/&tbl=&photo_nr=3&sok=&sort=&prev_id=1502735&next_id=1498777

The British Airways "Landor" scheme with the Coat Of Arms on the tail:
http://www.airliners.net/photo/British-Airways/Boeing-747-236B/1320781/L/&tbl=&photo_nr=6&sok=&sort=&prev_id=1325649&next_id=1303513

Continentals' "Meatball" scheme with all that gold:
http://www.airliners.net/photo/Continental-Airlines/Boeing-747-243B/1158690/L/&tbl=&photo_nr=4&sok=&sort=&prev_id=1261001&next_id=1155162

Uniteds' red, orange and blue stripes:
http://www.airliners.net/photo/United-Airlines/Boeing-747-238B/0643920/L/&tbl=&photo_nr=11&sok=&sort=&prev_id=0763402&next_id=0634286

Old school U.S. Air(bare aluminium with red stripes and blue tail):
http://www.airliners.net/photo/USAir/Boeing-767-2B7-ER/1255448/L/&tbl=&photo_nr=0&sok=&sort=&prev_id=&next_id=1238201

CLASSICS! All of them!

I miss some of the "long gone" schemes too.
Pan Am(any scheme):
http://www.airliners.net/photo/Pan-Am/Boeing-747-121/1457613/L/&tbl=&photo_nr=4&sok=&sort=&prev_id=1474675&next_id=1452101

TWA(red and white, not the last scheme):
http://www.airliners.net/photo/Trans-World-Airlines/Boeing-747-131/1445303/L/&tbl=&photo_nr=1&sok=&sort=&prev_id=1452251&next_id=1429234

Braniff and all their crazy colors:

Ozark:

Northeast(The Yellowbirds):

PSA. This one is of my favorite Turboprop of all time-the Lockheeb L-188C Electra:
http://www.airliners.net/photo/PSA---Pacific/Lockheed-L-188C-Electra/0865643/L/&tbl=&photo_nr=3&sok=&sort=&prev_id=0866050&next_id=0822608

I do have a bunch of old pics, but they are in photo form, not on my computer. I have some old Pan Am stuff (A310s and B747s), some TWA, I have old school United and NWA (Orient scheme), Usair, British Airways, and a TON of Delta in various schemes. All kinds of pax birds. Also a bunch of different freighter pics. I'd have to go look thru them to list everything I have. But like I said, they are hard copies, not digital (one of these days I'll get my scanner working!). The website I link to, www.airliners.net, is FANTASTIC! Here, I'll link you to the search engine, from there, you can look for what ever your heart desires! There is also www.jetphotos.net. Happy Plane Looking!  :-D
