Good Morning all
I was wondering if anyone out there could help me. I live next to KBOS and I have gotten interested in the atlantic crossing flights. I was wondering if it is possible with a hand held scanner to pick up the New York oceanic Freq? and is so what are the main Freq they use?
thanks in advance for your help

Well my guess that could be possible on a scanner type radio, but a outside antenna would be a major benefit for sure. I live in the Atlantic area of Canada with a couple of good HF receivers and coping N.Y. , Gander and many more Centers is not a problem.
Maybe some of the guy's that live in the KBOS area will give you a much better idea of reception.
Good luck

Hi again:
Here are the current ones and they don't change very often.
2887, 5550, 6577, 8918, 11396, 13297, 17907, (8846) All USB Some would be day time higher frequenies and the night time for the lower ones . Give them a try and keep touch .

Ian:
Have you gone on the sites where you can listen to the North Atlantic radio traffic on HF?
There you can listen to New York as well as other HF centers

Hi Ian,
Of those freqs that were listed, the most popular NY Oceanic HF freq is by far 6577 during the day. Flights departing/arriving northeast area airports such as BOS, JFK, PHL, EWR, etc. will be assigned this frequency first as they proceed southbound. Flights proceeding northbound will also be on this frequency before they are handed back to NY Center VHF frequencies.
As evening approaches they may start using 5550 and then later on into the evening they might use 3455. Eastbound transatlantic flights that depart from southeastern airports you'll typically hear first on 6577 or 5550. When they get past a certain point (I think it's 40 degrees west longitude) they are switched over to 5598 and sometimes 3016 is used as a backup.
I'm from Long Island, New York and all I have is a very long wire connected to my HF radio and it works very well for 6577, 5550, 3455, etc.
One thing I just noticed though, you were asking about Atlantic crossings east to west...most of the European flights coming to North America fly routes that take them further north so the vast majority of those flights will be talking to Gander oceanic and during the day most of that activity can be heard on 8831, 8864 and 8879.
Hope this is all useful! I'll pass more along as I think of it :-)

Good reception of New York the last few days on the "Family E" frequency 13354 in the late afternoon/early evening. New York was also working Piarco's airspace at the time on 13354, reporting that Piarco's HF capability was down and that they would relay. For example, heard New York working British Airways 246 enroute from Sao Paulo to London as they passed into Piarco airspace over 13N39W then exiting via 17N3730W into Santa Maria's airspace with the handoff to 6628.
