Newark Area Approach Departure Moved to PHL Tracon
« on: December 23, 2024, 14:00:09 UTC »
If you've listened to any Newark or Teterboro area approach/departure frequencies over the past several months, you might have noticed that these sectors are now referred to as "Newark Approach" and no longer "New York Approach".  This is because those sectors were moved by the FAA to the Philadelphia Tracon several months ago and are no longer part of New York Tracon (N90) in Garden City.  Although those sectors in and around Newark and Teterboro are now part of Philadelphia Tracon, those sectors are called "Newark Approach" or Newark Departure".  The LiveATC feed that cover those areas have all been updated with the new names.  There was actually some audio caught from the ZBW 134.3 feed where a pilot asks the controller about this very subject.  It can be found in the "Audio Clips" section of the forum.

The main reason for the move according to the FAA was to address the critical staffing issues at the New York Tracon (N90) in Garden City on Long Island.  It was a plan that has been in the works for a few years and finally happened around August 2024.  Some articles on the subject:

seems the move didn't go well tho? - they moved the people but the radar is being rerouted from Long Island to PHL and they didn't allow enough bandwidth...

Lots of issues both for radar and comms. I haven't flown into TEB in awhile now. Hopefully they get it figured out before my next trip out there.

Does anyone have a map that shows the specific areas transferred?

Does anyone have a map that shows the specific areas transferred?

Attached is Newark Approach Sectors lateral boundary, it extends vertically up to a maximum of 11000 feet (varies). This is based on the 2012 N90 SOP Manual. I submitted an FOIA request to the FAA for the latest N90 and PHL TRACON SOPs about 6 months ago and I'm still waiting.

Thanks for the map! Wow that would be like separating SFO from OAK and SJC!
