Newark feed coming soon, I hope
« on: March 02, 2005, 12:39:08 PM »
I used to run the SFO/SQL/PAO/NUQ feed, but moved to New Jersey....at the time I promised to bring up a Newark feed when I arrived here.  Well, I tried using my existing antenna, but could only pick up the aircraft in the air, with no responses from the controllers.

Since then, I've bought a larger antenna and will be getting it mounted to the chimney any day now. When that happens, I _hope_ the problem will be solved. At that time, you can expect to get a Newark feed with some combination of approach/twr/gnd, depending on reception and demand.

Failing that I'll probably be able to pick up KTEB (Teterboro).

Hi Keith-

Great to hear from you again...got your last email.  Teterboro would be great if you can't hear the controllers at Newark.  The approach sector that handles final vectors for Teterboro is 127.6, I believe.  I'm sure you have all the other frequencies (for Newark).  If not, let me know.

I'll be the happiest person on this forum if you could get TEB/EWR.   If I can help in anyway please let me know. I am also in the area, and fly frequently out of TEB. Here's a sample of my wishlist:

127.6 NY App/Dep
119.2 NY App/Dep
TEB Freqs

good news, bad news
« Reply #3 on: March 30, 2005, 01:48:21 PM »
I have an update on this....the good news is that my bro-in-law custom built a wall mount for my shiny new antenna (and 10ft mast).  More good news is that we're going to split it into multiple scanners, so I'll be running more than one feed.

The bad news...I'm going to be on vacation until end of April, so the feeds won't happen until May.

Scanner 1: TEB twr/gnd weekdays, CDW tower w/ends
Scanner 2: Newark approach (assuming I can get both sides of the conversation with the new antenna)

Ok, the antenna is mounted (on the custom bracket) on a 10ft poll on top of the house.  We're going to run the wiring from the attic to the computer room here in a couple of days.

I'll start off with a single feed and then get another machine prepped to run another feed.

It'll probably be Newark approach freqs on the first feed, then TEB and CDW towers on the 2nd feed.

Not sure which app sectors I'll be able to receive yet, we'll just have to find out what the reception is like when we fire up the new antenna.

North Arrival 120.15
METRO 132.8
22 Final 125.62
Departure 119.2
Robbinsville 128.55
MUGZY 127.6

hate to be a party pooper but if you are in pompton plains i really dont think even with a roof mounted antenna you will get both side of ewr. I used to live in paterson where i had my antenna mounted in my attic and i still got the controller on my radio but faintly and i at the time was way closer than you in pompton plains. I live here in North Bergen now and the clearest I get w/both aircraft and controller is TEB if I park myself on a hill overlooking NJ to the SW toward EWR I can also pick up faintly EWR controllers on my pro-95 w/the telescopic antenna from RS and not tthe stock rubber duckie

NYARTCC fan was right... I can only pick up the pilot sides of comms. In some cases, I can faintly hear the controller, but the it's unreadable.

Right now we have a 10ft mast for the antenna. We're going to replace it with a 15ft mast and see if it helps, but it's not looking good.

Failing that, I'll try my mother-in-law's house, which is atop a pretty good size hill nearby. That will be with the rubber duckie, so we'll see how it works out.

In the mean time, I can pick up Caldwell tower pretty clearly. Is there any interest in that stream?

That's ashame, CDW wouldn't fall far behind TEB. I'm sure people would appreciate that. But I'm a Tracon guy, so if you could get some sectors in N90, that would be killer.

I'm in Scotch Plains, NJ and I'm able to hear pilot sides but not much on the controller side. I'm wondering if anyone has any idea where the N90 controller transmissions originate from? When at Newark, I can receive NWK_DEP 119.2 fairly well, but I don't get any of the LIB_DEP sectos. I thought that maybe there was a transmitter (at least for LIB_DEP West 120.85) near the SBJ vor, but still nothing controller side from near there. Anyone have any ideas or info?

I find similarites between PHL and EWR. One of the them being it takes you to be on the top transmitters are on the field to pick them up! And I can gaurentee that the transmitters are on the field. Rich, As for LIB Dep, thats a good question. Could they be to the north of the city were there are nice big hills. Maybe near POU?. The FAA likes to put transmitters on hills/ mountains  :D

Rich, do you know what transmitters look like? That would help, I can post a shot on our forums.

I would have no idea what to look for when looking for the transmitters. Pics would be great. Just to the north of me are some high hills/mountains near Watchung and Berkley Heights. I know of a few homes that overlook the Newark/New York area and would seem to be the perfect location for a transmitter for this area. I haven't had a chance to try my handheld in that area near the overlook, but I'll try to get a chance this weekend and post my results. The only unfornuate thing is that moving there wouldn't be possible. Nearly all of the homes on the overlook, however modest the house itself is, sell for well over $1mil each.

I'll also take a look around the area and see if I can locate any transmitters.

To All -- Any Central NJ pilots that are familiar with the area and have any idea of transmitter locations?

I can get both sides of N90 on 118.175 and 120.85 with the squelch broken and faintly at that here in NB. 124.75 can get both side at time when I am in the Jersey City area and only pilot side on 126.8 and rarely i do get 120.85 and 118.175 without the squelch broken too. Late night listening seems to have the more clearer reception here. Jersey City area I can recieve faintly 125.325 and 127.175(Transmitter at Matawan NJ) sometimes rarely without squelch i can get 125.325

North Arrival 120.15
METRO 132.8
22 Final 125.62
Departure 119.2
Robbinsville 128.55
MUGZY 127.6

Freq       Location
-----------------------
120.15   Newark (primary and backup transmitter)
132.8     Solberg
125.62   Sparta
119.2     Newark (primary and backup transmitter)
128.55   Newark (primary and backup transmitter)
127.6     Newark (primary and backup transmitter)
120.85   Solberg

These frequencies are all listed as Newark...I believe the transmitters are right next to the NJ Turnpike on the east side of the field...except the Tower, which may transmit from the antenna(s) on the Tower:

118.3, 118.85, 119.2, 120.15, 120.85, 121.125, 121.5, 121.8, 123.85, 124.75, 124.85, 125.50, 125.85, 126.15, 126.275, 126.7, 127.3, 127.6, 127.85, 128.55, 128.8, 132.45, 132.7, 134.05, 134.825, 135.575.

These are listed as Sparta: 128.25, 121.725, 118.375, 122.5, 125.625, 127.975, 133.15

These are listed as Solberg: 120.85, 132.80

These are listed as Teterboro: 119.5, 120.675, 121.50, 121.90, 122.65, 125.1, 128.05, 132.025, 122.0, 122.20

Typically they are on platforms that are not very high (maybe 10-25' high).  You don't want the ground transmitters very high for air-to-ground communications in a crowded frequency band like 118-136 MHz.  This is mainly to avoid or reduce co-frequency and adjacent frequency interference.

Dave,

That's great info regarding the transmitter locations. Mind if I ask what your source is, or are you just privy to the information? Next time I'm near Solberg (I like to go to the Somerset Patriots minor league baseball games in Bridgewater, not far from SBJ), I'll bring my handheld along and see what I get.

I don't have an antenna here at home yet, but I've used a 25ft piece of coax with BNC connects to extend my stock handheld antenna to the roof through my bedroom window. Still not good enough to get the ground side of comms though. Where I live in Scotch Plains is low and we have high hills and mountains all around, so it kinda ruins my reception.

When I get a good antenna to put on the roof, and depending on the ground comms reception, I might consider becoming a feeder.

Yeah, let us know what you find.  Whenever I pass through the Newark area I'm usually listening from a mobile radio in my car and seldom have time to take the side trip to verify these things.

The source is a database I have that I picked up off this web site:
http://avionicsnotes.ent.ohiou.edu/rfi/airspace.htm

It's not very user-friendly...I use `strings` and grep on Linux to find things in it.

Since I didn't have much luck picking up gnd and air for the Newark approach freqs, I've resorted to streaming Caldwell tower for now. It's a Class D that gets very busy on w/ends. I've experienced some pretty dodgy controlling there as a pilot, so I'm sure we'll find some beauties in the archives after a while.

Teterboro is next. I have the second scanner ready to go, just need to fire up the 2nd laptop.
