need Calgary (CYYC) archive from 17 Nov
« on: November 26, 2011, 06:49:30 PM »
I'm trying to download the archive of Calgary (CYYC) on 17 Nov, 1400-1430Z.  There was an incident on the flight my parents were on (AA-1166), and I'm trying to get the ATC tapes, but the site says the archives are not available for that time.  Apparently, they are also not available for most of that day.  If anyone can help me access these archives, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

Unfortunately you're probably out of luck! It looks like the recordings were either not archived due to a technical problem or the feed was down during that time. I feel your pain - I was on a flight a while back and when I went to get the recordings, the feed I needed was down for the exact time I needed.

However, in case you haven't seen the cadors report yet, here's the details:

AAL 1166, an American Airlines MD-83, departed from Runway 28 at Calgary and a short time after getting airborne, the crew declared an emergency and advised that they needed to return. It was reported that the crew of a following aircraft observed sparks/flames from the MD-83's port engine. The ARFF equipment was called out as the aircraft landed on Runway 34 at 1428z. Two aircraft on final for Runway 28 were re-cleared for an approach on Runway 34 so an inspection on Runway 28 could be completed. TSB report to follow.

UPDATE TSB reported that during the takeoff roll on Runway 28 at Calgary Intl (CYYC), the left engine (Pratt & Whitney JT8D-200) in the American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-83, flight AAL 1166 emitted sparks from the tailpipe. After the crew was informed, an emergency was declared and the aircraft returned to Runway 34 with the engine operating. Initial examination of the engine revealed internal metal debris. The engine will be changed at CYYC, and the TSB supplied with a strip report.
