New interactive feed map
« on: September 13, 2005, 03:41:13 PM »
I'm working on a new interactive feed map for the site.  You can access it from the left nav bar on the main site, or this URL:

http://www.liveatc.net/feedmap/feedmap.html

I'd love to get feedback on what you like/don't like, new features, etc.  It's currently a work in progress, so there are many ideas I have for features I'd still like to implement.  Some of your requests may be for features that are already in-progress, but I'd still love to hear them!

Feel free to post your requests/ideas/comments/flames here!  Thanks!

Very cool.  Now I have an idea where some of the ICAOs I didn't recognize are located.

Perhaps in the areas with quite a few overlapping labels, you could move the labels out and draw lines to the feed locations - the east coast for example.

I'll have to open it in IE later--I'm a Mozilla Firefox fan/user.

Thanks!  I hope it will load for me later!  :D

Use the scroll wheel on your mouse to zoom in and the labels spread apart to where they no longer overlap.

Very nice.

Yep. Except that when I clicked on the tag for BVI it linked to Burlington, VT.  (I'm only pointing that out to be helpful.   :) )

Just a 'me too' post here.

The map works fine for me using Firefox 1.0.6, and Opera 8.02 for both Linux and Windows. No access to a Mac, so I can't help there. But it works for the above with no problems.

I just tried it again in Firefox, works fine now.  Wonder what it was before that made it not function for me.  8)

Very nice!  Running Firefox as well and it seems to be working as designed.

How about State/Country borders in the map?  Possible?

Excellent job.  :)

Okay, I got dave to prop an updated feedmap.  The feedmap has a "changes" link on the left side if you're interested in all the details.

Short summary though (thanks for everyones's feedback):
The labels now work in FireFox just fine.
The KBVI mislink is now fixed.

Also, in response to KSYR-pjr's question, you can already get all those borders.  Just choose either "Road" or "Labeled Aerial" from the Map Style dropdown in the upper left.

Hmmm.... not seeing the Map Style drop-down in Firefox.  Suppose it is yet another evil plot by MS to prevent features from fully running in other browsers?  ;-)

EDITED:  Disregard!  UPPER LEFT means on my left, not yours!   ;)

I've got many more ideas up my sleeve, so expect more soon!

I think I'll probably make "Labeled Aerial" the default style from now on, too.

As an avid listener to VFR towers, this new map is great because you can zoom in all the way to a 20 mile radius and see the VFR checkpoints the pilots are using.

The map is working in Mozilla/Firefox now. To all those who are Mozilla/Firefox users make sure to have the newest Java Runtime Enviroments installed for the best functionality with Java apps. Check out www.sun.com/java for the latest.

Nice work, I can't wait to see it finished. Hey don't forget HNL :)

The map is built using strictly DHTML and Javascript (which, despite its name, has little to nothing to do with Java).  So while I agree that it's good to have the newest JRE installed, it shouldn't be required to view the map -- it's designed so everything just works out-of-the-box.  No plugins, no add-ins, no ActiveX controls, no downloads.

HNL will be there soon, as will the international feeds.  Glad you like it!

I added some more stuff to the map last night.  You can look at the "Changes" link on the left side of the map to see a list of all the changes.

Try the new "Zoom" command from the airport popups!
