Title: Need feed volunteer for Chicago Approach 125.0
Post by: dave on December 01, 2013, 11:35:50 AM
We have some unfilterable interference right on 125.0 at our Chicago megafeed site so we've finally had to lock out 125.0.  This creates a hole in the Chicago Departure coverage, especially overnight on the mid shift.

If anyone is within range of O'Hare (5-12 miles +/-) and think they can help, please contact me.

Thanks,
Dave

Didn't you tell me Dave that there was nothing that could be done to fix that problem?

It's likely that nothing can be done to fix the problem at the current feed location. If someone can set up a scanner at an alternate location, the interference probably won't be an issue there.

Chananya contacted me via PM, since he saw that I live near KORD, and asked about my reception of 125.0.  I have a Sony Wavehawk with a Diamond RH77CA whip.  I can pickup both sides with no problem, but I also have the constant carrier with a squealing noise.

Thanks Marty…very unfortunate, that frequency is.  :-)

As a follow-up, I also have a Vertex-Standard VXA-210 Pilot Nav/Com Transceiver which I have for backup communications for GA flying.

I also get the constant carrier with a squealing noise with that unit too on 125.0.

It's a very important frequency - but we have yet to find a location around Chicago that doesn't have interference on that frequency.  125.0 is a very bad frequency, primarily due to cable TV leakage interference and possibly other things.  Very hard to filter out.

Is there anything they can do at the transmitter sight to minimize the issue?

Yes - there is one thing.  Stop using 125.0 and switch it to a different frequency.  :-)  It has nothing to do with the transmitter per se - it has to do with the frequency.

Have they thought about it?

Unless they start having issue communicating with aircraft they won't be thinking about it.  The FAA only cares about operational issues - this is not an operational issue.  It's just an annoyance to those of us who would like to listen.

Didn't it work a little bit better on the old ORD departure? Feed at least it didn't keep the squelch open very long and you can hear both sides. What happen to that violator

We're still looking for a volunteer in range of ORD willing to feed 125.0 - that is about all I can say right now.  Doesn't really matter what there was before.  :-)

We now have a reasonably solid 125.0 feed.  Also added a stereo feed that has all the Chicago Departure sectors on it.
