Nav aid question: German Corner ?
« on: December 02, 2005, 06:14:54 PM »
Listening to Swiss Radar (Zurich Sectors), I've heard flights northbound into Rhein's airspace get cleared direct to "German Corner". I have current high and low altitude charts for this area but can not find "German Corner" anywhere ? Presumably a VOR or NDB and from what I can tell located in the area between TRA (Trasadingen) and south of Frankfurt. Anyone here with local knowledge that can give me a clue as to where it is (and why it doesn't appear to be on any chart) ?

Hello JetScan1

"German Corner" is not a real waypoint. It is a point the pilot has to create in the FMC to stay in the German Airspace and still getting a Shortcut. It is defined as 13 NM on the 270 Radial (West) of KRH (Karlsruhe) VOR.
When you coming from the aria of Zürich and the controller want to give you a shortcut on you way to London for example you will get the clearens " XXX cleared German corner COA (costa)" You can get a shortcut via this point on a south east rout as well of course.

I hope I could help you  :!:  :!:  :!:

Martin,

Interesting, thanks for the reply. That's the first time I've ever heard of "secret" (unpublished) waypoints like that. I guess airlines that only know the secret handshake know about it ? Now I wonder why they never bothered just putting it on the charts and in the aircraft FMS database ?

Thanks. Yep, TRA270/13 looks right. Having that live radar on the web would be cool too. Is anyone webcasting it from anywhere yet ?
