The one time KEWR is down there's a runway overrun...
« on: June 16, 2019, 10:59:55 AM »
KEWR Tower had been down for a few days, which is rare. I regret not having reported it the first day, because yesterday a 757 landed hard enough to buckle the nosegear area and cause a runway overrun. There hasn't been anything like this in 6 years there so it was quite the bummer to miss it.

Technically it wasn't down, just had some really loud interference behind it that drowned out the audio. Hopefully the NTSB releases it.

I might be able to clean it up. Can you get me the clip?

Audio seemed unremarkable

Accident took place at 1655Z, around 25 minutes into the recording.

The audio was indeed unremarkable.

The KEWR2 receiver is experiencing narrowband RFI on the Tower frequuency or it would have had a better recording.

Starts at 21:24.

But anyway, yes, I'm referring to KEWR2. That's the good tower feed, since it only has the tower freq and has always had good reception. But for the past ~10 days it's had that really loud interference tone sometimes. I think the provider might not be aware of it.

KEWR1 (which someone else linked above) was probably unremarkable because it covers 2 other frequencies and is always missing various transmissions, in this case the accident aircraft. I assume it also has poor reception since it often misses other aircraft transmissions and its audio generally weak and noisy.
