Wanting to listen it... Require help!
« on: April 26, 2009, 07:49:43 AM »
G'day there,

I'm doing my CPL and am located about 10 minutes drive from my local airport which is YMCY Maroochydore Airport, It's controlled airspace...

Anyway, I can basically see the airport across the beach when I'm on the beach, but I'm one row of houses back from the shoreline. It'd probably be 10k's across. It's basically like this:

I'm looking to buy something so I can listen in... even if it is just the aircraft above.

Would this be what I'm looking for?
http://cgi.ebay.com/Yaesu-FT-60R-Dual-Band-VHF-UHF-Handheld-FT60R-Radio_W0QQitemZ260385545204QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item260385545204&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

or am I looking at the wrong thing? and If so could you advise as to what I need. Thanks :)

It would appear that link is broken - But I fixed it because I'm good like that.

That scanner will do what you require, with the only issue being reception. If possible, an external antenna would help. If not, a magmount or similar works.

I would highly recommend a magmount antenna for the car - I use this one http://tinyurl.com/cvembh coupled with a Uniden UBC92 Close Call scanner http://tinyurl.com/dgkhqf and I can pick up most controller transmissions and most aircraft in the air at a distance of 25 miles so you shouldn't have an issue. I would say that a BNC connector is more important to me that some other feature I'm probably never going to use, as it lets you add antennas quickly and easily and isn't as fragile as SMA.

It would also appear you read the blunt post I accidentally submitted while still typing and fixed the link!!

For (civil) aviation you want a receiver covering the 118 - 137 MHz band. You should then decide whether you want a single-frequency receiver or a scanner that listens on multiple frequencies (allowing you to monitor Tower, Ground and App/Dep at the same time.) If there is mainly ocean between you and the airport, there is a good chance that you may be able to receive planes on the ground. It looks like the radio you picked will be capable, but I didn't take a look at the detailed specifications.
