They're going around at JFK tonight

Caribbean 424 lined up on the wrong runway (13R) and had to go around, an Avianca did it twice - looks pretty tricky as they are turning them into the approach on 22L.  Visual to 13L must be tricky if you are not familiar.

Avianca also missed their taxiway entrance...

It wasn't tricky; AVIANCA just screwed up twice. I wasn't there for Caribbean.

Firstly I will admit that while I am fascinated by aviation my knowledge is ...patchy to say the least, so excuse any daft question I ask. While listening to JFK on 29th at about 7am eastern there were a number of go-arounds on 22L(I think) - Air China and a Delta both went around once while a Jetblue aborted twice and diverted to Atlantic City. The rvr given by the tower controller was between 2500 & 3500 during this time - is this why aircraft had difficulty landing ? Does this also mean the ILS/glideslope was inoperable during this time ? Also 22R was not in service at this time so all departures backed up - am I correct in presuming that the controller could not release any departure traffic until the other traffic had been re-vectored for approach?

Sorry about the multiple questions but any help would be great.

The landing runway was actually 22r as 22L was closed for renovations. The RVR for 22R is 4000'. It went down to 2500" just as JBU was on short final although the ATIS still listed 2 miles visibility. JBU went around & then the other 2 went around. We lost the approach & with about ten arrivals holding, it would be insane to let departures go since most altitudes would be filled. I went home at that point but I believe the approach was then moved to 22L as they finally opened that runway. I hope this helps.

Appreciate the help Glencar - sounds like life at JFK is never dull. Incidently it didn't seem like 31L at intersection KK was being used for departures - why was this?

I actually felt a little bad for the guys on the second time.  He was clearly embarrassed and really apologetic.  How does N90 work, do you always work just one or two frequencies?

It depends on the time of day/night. At that point we had 3 freqs up, one being departure. I was running the show(controller in charge) so I didn't get to hear him. It's highly unusual for a pilot to do that twice.
