Title: Listening to Oshkosh 2008
Post by: dave on July 25, 2008, 04:15:54 AM
Oshkosh is only a few days away!  Yes, I do wish I could be there.  I'm sure many of you do, too.

But LiveATC and its growing community have teamed up to at least make you feel like you're there.
Our Oshkosh area feeder has teamed up with our KMSN feeder (who will be at Oshkosh) to provide two feeds for the event.

Listen to the busiest GA tower in the world!
Listen to Runway 18/36 (http://d.liveatc.net/kosh2.m3u)
Listen to Runway 9/27 (http://d.liveatc.net/kosh2.m3u)
Listen to Fisk Approach (http://d.liveatc.net/kosh.m3u)

If your music playing software doesn't understand MP3 playlists or streaming audio the links above may not work for you.  If that is the case, please don't write us - just go to the feed listings (http://www.liveatc.net/feedindex.php?type=class-d-center), scroll down to the Oshkosh listings, and use the Flash or Java-based players on that page.  The Flash-based player should work for everyone.

Airventure info - everything you need to know about the event itself:
http://www.airventure.org/2008/planning/advance.html

To understand the arrival/departure and ATC procedures read the NOTAM:
http://www.airventure.org/2008/flying/2008_notam.pdf

Air Traffic Control procedures in use at Oshkosh (the NOTAM listed above is much more comprehensive):
http://www.airventure.org/atc/

Listen to the busiest GA tower in the world!
Listen to Runway 18/36 (http://d.liveatc.net/kosh2.m3u)
Listen to Runway 9/27 (http://d.liveatc.net/kosh.m3u)

Occasionally the feeders may add one other frequency depending on activity and demand (e.g., Fisk Approach) but the level of activity demands single frequencies on each feed.  One or both of the feeders may switch to another frequency to give a sample of the Approach activity.

The second Oshkosh feed (kosh2) is now scanning both runways for all VFR traffic. The primary feed is scanning Milwaukee approach for IFR traffic, among other things.

Busiest GA tower in the world????

How about busiest TOWER in the world :-)

From the Milwaukee Sentinal:

"Tiny Wittman airport is the busiest airport in the world on a few of the days of AirVenture, according to FAA statistics. Last year on July 22, the day before the convention officially started, controllers at Wittman handled 2,941 departures and landings, while O’Hare in Chicago had 2,642 and Atlanta’s airport handled 2,887. On the Wednesday of last year’s AirVenture, Oshkosh was again the busiest airport in the world.

Adelman pointed out that Wittman was open only 10 hours on those days, while O’Hare and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson compiled their numbers of departures and landings in 24-hour periods."

bkoller hit the nail on the head. Nice job bkoller!

The busiest GA in the world is (drumroll please...) KVNY. Source: TV program "One Six Right"

I actually liked it better with 9/27 tower freq on one feed, and 18/36 on the other!

May go back to that format soon, depending on traffic.

The other (kosh) location does not pick up the tower controllers, unfortunately.  So the split format was not working out well.  The other location is not nearly as close as the kosh2 feed.  For now the other feed is on Fisk Approach, but not hearing the controllers there, either.  Does anyone know where the Fisk Approach transmitter is?  Is it on the field at Oshkosh?

Kind of puzzling, since the kosh feed is only 2 miles from the field.

I would love to see a webcam of a Oshkosh fly-in.  Does anyone know if this exist? :-D

Just Google 'Oshkosh webcams'

Guess the FAA just arrived - just heard N2 get cleared to land.

Sorry for the reception on Fisk Approach.  Looking for suggestions on that second feed - for some reason that location can't pick up the Fisk Approach transmitter, only the planes.

Listening to KOSH AirVenture! I Love it! I have attended 12-14 times but now wheelchair and health doesn't permit it and this service is so great that it takes me back to the good ol' days. Thanks for all who made this happen.

I am flying high in the eye of my mind.

Thanks for the feed!  First time in years that I have not attended.  It would be nice to have 133.85 added to the feed during the airshow portion in the afternoon.  That is the show air boss freq.

Fisk Freq is a mobile transmitter located at Fisk, according to AF tech.

There was a crash today at Oshkosh just after 1300 CDT (1800Z).  A Piper Tri-Pacer flipped upon landing.  Only minor injuries.  9-27 was shutdown for a short amount of time, but 18-36L/R was shutdown for about 50 minutes. Aircraft in the vicinity of the airport were put into holding over the airport and the FISK arrival was halted until they opened 9-27. The KOSH2 feed doesn't appear to be in the archive, only the KOSH feed.

Yes, its in the archive.  I was listening live when it happened.  Grab the 8/30 1800Z - 1830Z file from OSH2. Accident is about 3 minutes in.

What is going on Thursday morning?  I fired up the stream about 15:30 UT and they keep announcing that the airspace is closed and they will pass any information along as they have it.

They had a mishap on 27

Sounds like they just opened 36 right to traffic.

The only feed remaining at this time is the kosh feed - kosh2 is off the air since the feeder needed to take his machine home.  We thank him immensely for the great reception at the field.  In the meantime, we'll see how the kosh feed does tomorrow.  Hopefully reception will be improved.

Fatal accident on runway 27 today.

Damn, seems like every year as of late there is a stall-spin on approach.

I can only hear the aircraft on the KOSH feed no tower controllers

There is something wrong with the setup on the main kosh feed...since it is remote it is difficult to debug from here.  We'll see what we can do but something is clearly wrong.

Sorry.  It happens.

I just got back from OSH - it was an incredible experience. The airshow, everything.

FYI, I did witness the tri pacer crash off of runway 36L. Scary stuff.

Some compilations will be put out this week - to preserve all the great tower action we gathered this week.  Stay tuned.

Did anyone save the NOTAM? The link is now empty. For ovious reasons since the event is over.

Could someone be kind enough to post it?
