It was N999LJ.  Just arrived from TEB at 2308.

It was a 2006 Bombardier LearJet 60.

Compare the stripes before/after and you'll see.

Is this what was up on guard freqs this morning? We heard it at work, not sure if it was the same incident. It was like, "mayday mayday mayday, we've lost engine power, 3,000 feet and descending".  Same incident?

This happened during the takeoff roll and if they got any altitude, it wasn't much.  RIP   :-(

This plane had Blink182's drummer Travis Barker and DJ AM on it.  They were the only 2 that survived.  I guess they have critical injuries and are burned bad.

i wonder what the round robin at TEB was all about the day before? Maintenance checks perhaps?

Most likely 3 choices:

1) Maint test flight
2) Demo ride
3) Diversion back to orgination (unlikely due to routing)

Upon further review, 3 details have emerged (not sure about the reliability):

1)  On Sept 12, the aircraft was supposed to fly TEB-TUL but diverted back to TEB.
2)  The TEB-TEB flight on Sept 18 was indeed a test flight
3)  The crash flight was supposedly intended to fly TEB-VNY, except there was no IFR flight plan on file (and I don't think the -60 has that kind of range, so I doubt this last part is accurate)

Well the news is reporting that there was a flight plan on file from CAE-VNY. It's pretty close to max range for the 60. Normally done with the thought that a diversion for fuel is a possibility....and than refile accordingly. As far as it not even showing up, maybe it's blocked on 135 legs under a particular company call sign. In any case, a very sad story indeed. A good friend knew one of the pilots really well.....he's devastated by this. One minute you're cleared for takeoff...the next......   :-(
