KSFO Upgrade - NOW ONLINE
« on: March 12, 2006, 02:22:05 PM »
Quite a few listeners have written lately to express an interest in adding additional streams and frequencies to the KSFO feed.  We are very lucky to have the assistance, hard work, and site so close to the field thanks to the folks at DynEd.  (http://dyned.com/)

After some discussion, we’re going to try something new.  Given that so many people are interested in “upgrading” certain feeds, we’re going to give KSFO a trial run and see how it works.

Our plan is to put a dedicated streaming machine in, with an 8-input sound card, and a number of additional scanners.  Initially we’d like to break it out to at least four feeds, with the potential to add even more depending on how this goes.

Financially this means purchasing the equipment, building it, installing the software, and getting it out there.  We’ve spec’d out the system, and here is how it breaks down:

MicroATX Case and Power Supply, $79.99
Motherboard w/ video, audio, and LAN,  $59.99
512MB RAM, $46.00
80GB SATA HD, $55.00
8 Input Sound Card, $ 179.00

Total         $419.98

We have a few scanners left, so we’ll supply them for this one.

Each feed will be on it’s own MONO stream, not in stereo.

Here’s how this will work:

If you are interested in donating specifically to upgrading the KSFO feed, please be sure to either let one of us know that your donation is for KSFO, put a note in the comments through PayPal, or post a message here.

If you just want to pledge a donation in the event that we don’t reach our goal, just post a message here with the amount, or send us a private e-mail if you would prefer.

Either way, I’ll keep this thread updated with the status of the donations, and after 3 weeks or so we’ll see where we are.

Thanks for everyone’s interest!

Sean

Why not buy a Dell? They might be on the junky side, but you can get a "good-enough" one for 200 bucks after rebate :) I hope this will be an awesome feed  8)

Well, it's the difference between $240 and $200 as you suggest.  My experience with Dell has been that it's not possible to get a PC delivered to my door that meets these specs for $200.  On top of ANY PC we need the 8-input sound card, so as I said - if you can find a PC from Dell that meets these specs, and get it delivered to me for $200, that's what we'll buy.

oh, hehe. I never bought a pc from Dell, so I have no clue what they offer. I just see those cute little ads in the paper for really cheap puters :)

I am VERY pleased to report that we've received the remaining balance, $270, from Brian Buckley of Live-Radio.net.  Brian has very generously donated to the fund, and has helped us reach our goal in very short order.

I'm sure that I speak for everyone here that listens to the streams, and enjoys KSFO, that we are all very grateful.  Thanks, Brian, and our other donors very much.

Be sure to check out and support www.live-radio.net

Just logged in to the forums for the 1st time in 2 weeks since I was on vacation and away from the internet and I'm on Cloud 9 right now!  not only is the SFO feed getting an upgrade, but thanks to LiveRadio, I'm listening to a radio station I haven't heard since leaving the UK almost 15 years ago!

Awesome!

The long-awaited KSFO machine was brought online yesterday.  The new setup includes:

KSFO Tower               http://audio.liveatc.net:8012/ksfo_twr
KSFO Ground             http://audio.liveatc.net:8012/ksfo_gnd
KSFO Clearance         http://audio.liveatc.net:8012/ksfo_clr
NORCAL Approach      http://audio.liveatc.net:8012/ksfo_app
NORCAL Departure     http://audio.liveatc.net:8012/ksfo_dep
KSFO Class B              http://audio.liveatc.net:8012/ksfo_classb

Thanks VERY MUCH to everyone who donated to this fund, as well as to David and Klaus at DynEd for their help getting it setup and working!

We'll post some pictures of the final setup in the next week or so.

Nice setup ! I'm just wondering what frequencies you intend to monitor on the approach/departure radios ? The frequencies you have listed are not exactly what you are actually monitoring. For example, on the NORCAL departure radio you list 120.900 and 135.100, but 135.100 is not active. On the NORCAL approach radio you list 134.500 and 135.650, but 135.650 is not active. And on the KSFO Class B radio 120.900, 135.100 are not active, although I see 135.650 is. Controller reception on the approach frequencies is also very poor to nil, is this a temporary antenna problem, or a location issue ? DJ

I know this is still new so things are being worked out, but does anyone else notice that there is absolutely no ATC in the norcal feeds, just the aircraft?? I know I heard ATC when these feeds were first up???

I concurr

reception issues?  . Even the tower controller is rarely heard on the tower feed. This was not the case previously.

This location is very close to the airport, is there a hidden issue?

Thanks

Mike

Everything at the local controller level (delivery/ground/tower) work fine for me. It's the approach/departure that I generally only hear the aircraft, unless it's the approach end going to Oakland. Other than that, it's only the aircraft I hear on the TRACON portions of the feed.

Antenna issues.  It is being worked on but progress is slow.
