Title: KRDU Feed?
Post by: jdfmoc on December 14, 2008, 11:48:17 AM
Anyone know what happen to the KRDU Tower Feed?

The feeder announced recently that he was moving out of the area and that it would be coming down for good.

This information was posted recently but upon closer inspection I see that the RDU feeder inadvertently posted this in the private "feeders-only" forum here, not in any of the public forums.

The feeder knows about it and should be able to fix it today.

Anything we can do to help the feeder? Still nothing but static ...

I will check in with him again.  A new RDU feed is about to go up - the Tower only feed is still not live.

This problem has been cleared...it was a power glitch that caused the scanner to start scanning banks other than the ATC bank.

I downloaded the iphone app to listen to KRDU but the approach feed is just static and the tower/approach feed is silent.  Any news on these feeds?

Thanks.

I have an RDU Tower feed installed but it's not working well due to issues beyond my control.

I do have a system and radio (even an antenna) right near RDU and am looking for another location to install it.

Stay tuned.

Hmm. Not sure why it's down. I'll check it when I get home. Sorry.

How close does it need to be?  I'm about 10 miles SW of the airport and would be willing to host the gear...

sounds like we're on top of each other? Apex or Cary. I'm in Apex.

Cary.  Just west of 55 off of Carpenter Firestation Road.

I wasn't sure if I'd be close enough to pick up tower and ground traffic and I don't have any gear of my own to test it out.  Can you get it from Apex?

Yes. I get approach ok and tower sometimes. I get aircraft fine when they're on our side. I imagine I'm missing a bunch from the West side.

I'm just off 55 near the Peakway (Amherest). So you're a bit closer.

Anyway, I just fixed my setup. Power cable on the scanner has grown flaky and was not powering the scanner. I wiggled it and it's on now. I'm going to have to keep an eye on it and possibly get a new power supply.

Ultimately I'd like to set this up at my work. I work across the street from Factory Shops so I'd be practically on airport property. I did a test though and got immense amounts of hum on the scanner. I work in a data center. Tons of computers and fluorescent lights. Dave explained that none of that is good for scanning. I only have a small mobile car antenna attached to it too. I've thought about getting a real airband antenna for my roof. Not sure how far I want to take this hobby. :)

Anyway, give KRDU2 a listen and let me know what you think. I have KTTA in there too I get them fairly well and its fun to listen to the students landing the cessnas over there. I hope to be doing that at some point in the future. But for now I just listen.

Sounds good, thanks for taking care of this!

Preferably inside of 10 miles, but it depends on terrain.  If you are higher than the airport's elevation with a clear and mostly line of sight path, that could work.  I have a good friend in RDU who has the LiveATC equipment...still looking for someone who has the ability and desire to help host it.  I hope we can make it work out with someone, but I am prepared to hold out for someone relatively close with a more guaranteed chance of reception.  I generally try to deploy these systems at locations within a few miles of the field(s) or on the field.  Still working on a number of options.

I appreciate all yall are doing for the live feed. I work at the tower and come home and listen to them. I hope that we get a feed close to the airport and can hear all the communication: controller to pilot on approach control.

Dave,
Have you checked with the airport authority about hosting it, or the fbos on the field. I know the airport host a feed they run it to the observation deck.

Any questions or ideas you can ask me. Thanks a bunch yall

I've ordered an air band antenna so hopefully that will improve the feed soon.

@jdfmoc. I don't know if you have contacts with whoever controls the audio output at the observation deck. But for the past few weeks its been nearly inaudible. I don't know if its a hardware issue out there (cold weather lately mabye?) or if someone has just bumped a volume knob somewhere. But it'd be cool if they could fix that.

And I'll mention again, that I'd be happy to donate my setup to the airport authority if they can give me a secure location to store the PC & scanner and provide an Internet uplink. Hosting these things on site would probably be the best way to get all the freqs.

Glad KRDU2 is up.  And just wanted to say Thank You from a chap who lives on the other side of Raleigh...  glad to be able to listen in.

Put a new airband antenna up. I can get ATIS now which I couldn't before. Still don't seem to pick up the East freqs. Just the West side. And can't get ground. But Tower, Approach & Departure are now a bit clearer.

If anyone goes to the KRDU observation park, the scanner is now back on line. A workman opened the door to the maintenance room where the equipment's located. I took a look and found the issue was the antenna was disconnected. I put that back together and it's much better listening now.

Interestingly it appears no one's maintaining this setup. The scanner was covered with what appeared to be several years worth of dust. I poked around and saw that there's a phone drop in there but nothing that looked like an data drop. It'd be sweet to drop a PC in this room and feed this. It's literally the perfect location.
