Is "alpha" a callsign suffix?
« on: September 14, 2008, 20:21:54 UTC »
I have heard a few airline callsigns use "alpha" as what seemed like a suffix... was it really a suffix? If so, what does it mean?

Or, was it just a part of their callsign?

Example:
"Delta-thirty-alpha"

Thanks!

What happens here is that the same callsign can not be used in the sky at the same time. In this instance, there were two flights that had the callsign of DAL30. One of them was renamed "Delta thirty alpha" so it wouldn't be confused with the other flight that hadn't landed/closed their flight plan.

Ah, that makes plenty of sense.

Thank you!
