"They found a bomb or something"
« on: March 16, 2005, 12:45:39 PM »
Yes, I heard those words over the feed Monday.   Apparently a construction crew dug up some unexploded ordinance on the airport and they had to evacuate half the field and close one of the busier runways.   We had some weather rolling in at the time too.  The tower was getting a little hectic trying to recover all the aircraft in the pattern while at the same time dealing with three news choppers stacked up over the airport.

They later determined that the UXBs were dummy practice bombs and posed no threat.  (Sanford was a Naval Air Station from WWII thru 1968.)

Something even I didn't realize until I read that second article is that Sanford is "the second-busiest community airport in the country, with more than 2 million commercial passengers passing through its gates last year."
