KAPA - Hearing Tower Only
« on: October 19, 2018, 01:22:16 AM »
Not sure what the procedure is to report this, but all night on KAPA, I've been hearing tower only, no readback or anything at all from pilots (aside from one helicopter requesting departure). Curious if there's a problem with this feed. I mean things like landing clearances and taxi instructions that definitely require readback aren't being read back.

I'm also getting a lot of callsigns referring to KDEN flights - not sure if this is normal for Centennial Tower to handle these but I certainly don't hear them during the day.

Mostly just curiosity here - thanks in advance.

You will see there is a Denver approach frequency listed in the feed description.
The Denver approach control will be switching to multicast at night: The controller will be broadcasting on several frequencies while the planes may remain on separate frequencies. So you could hear the controller talking to planes approaching DEN but the planes are actually on a different frequency.
Check the DEN departure feed for hearing DEN approach control at night i believe they use one of the departure frequencies.
You will probably then hear it's the same controller.

Regarding reception of aircraft:
Maybe feed reception is not good enough to pick up aircraft close to the ground or approaching from the wrong direction.

Have you heard the feed any better at some point?

A new set of feeds will be going up for KAPA in the next 2 weeks or so....with all of the frequencies separated out.

Wow thanks for such an informative answer!

I actually like how the freqs are all in one right now, but I guess that'll be neat.

Most listeners don't like the all-in-one format for very busy airports like Centennial - too many exchanges are missed due to frequency congestion. But in this case we'll have a luxury since we'll be able to have both an all-in-one feed and a bunch of separate feeds. Best of both worlds.

Oh that'll be nice then. I figured Centennial was slow enough to justify all-in-one but maybe I am missing things. Thanks for the info!
