JFK VOR13L part 1

All the company names will be changed to prevent bruised egos...initially I thought the pilot was a moron but later to fix it he turned out to be pretty good...

So one beautiful night we're on VOR13L and I'm working the final. It's one of those nights where everyone is seeing everything so I'm clearing everyone for VAPs to follow the preceding aircraft and to "remain on or east of the CRI223R so as to stay out of LGA's way.

I've got a B737 on the downwind and his sequence is on base leg at Sandy Hook. I call the traffic "12 o'clock-- 5 miles NE bound an Airbus"--he calls it in sight--I clear him to follow and keep working.

I go through a couple of scans and realize it looks like he's turning inside his traffic. I tell him I want to verify he's following the correct traffic and call the traffic again now at "10 o'clock--3 and 1/2 miles NE bound Airbus." He says--"Yeah that's him." Then he asks, "Is this gonna work?"

And I kind of laugh to myself then and tell him--"Well I hope so sir--I did clear YOU to follow HIM so it's all you now."

No response.

I key up again..."If you'd like to take it back to the left a bit and square it off I'll leave you some room."

"Ok thanks--we'll try that."

So I turn the next couple left a bit--nothing drastic and I notice the B737 turns back left AND then slows too. Back to 160--everyone behind him is at 210 and everyone in front of him until CRI is a mix of 190 to 210. I think to myself--'Great here we go.'

But then once the Boeing gets in line he goes back to 210.

So initially I thought the guy was a moron--but then I was pretty impressed with what he did with the speeds and when he went to tower I called local and told him to tell the pilot "nice work with the speeds."

Usually when they slow on they're own like that they leave it back unless we tell them a speed to CRI or some DME. I was pretty busy and it really helped that he picked it back up--I was pleasantly surprised.

Good work man--where ever you are...

Good thing southwest doesnt fly into there... they slow down to about 130 on final screw EVERYTHING up. Ive been told its company policy, maybe since that 1 ran off the end at Midway few years ago.

Good old Southwest!! After a while you figure out who's going to slow and who'll keep it up and you just start assigning speeds to different companies based on that.

I love jumping on here after a busy session to listen to myself--my son gets a kick out of it too. He told his kindergarten teacher he wanted to be an air traffic controller...!!!

Feel like sharing what archive feed and date/time a sample of your work could be found?

I can definitely tell you that this isn't true. You'll hear on the LAS feeds all the time that just about all of the traffic on final to 25L are instructed to maintain 170kts until SHAND (7DME). By the time they are anywhere near there, they are handed off to tower. Inside 7DME is another story.

But I guess the determining factor between what you're saying and what I am saying is how long the final approach is.

You know what--I'll be happy to when I get back to work. I'm on vaca this week and I don't really remember 'when' any archived stuff is. I suppose you guys would want to hear a pretty busy session.

DrFinal, if you haven't already, you might introduce your son to VATSIM.  If he's over 13, he can start controlling pretty quickly.

I think we're just happy that someone who is in the business of a hobby we love is nice enough to come here and share their stories and experiences.
