JFK Tower feed change
« on: July 21, 2011, 08:36:28 AM »
While I was in New York yesterday I split JFK Tower into 3 feeds:

119.1/125.25 (http://d.liveatc.net/kjfk_twr1.m3u)
123.9 (http://d.liveatc.net/kjfk_twr2.m3u)
Combined feed with 119.1 having priority over 123.9 (http://d.liveatc.net/kjfk_twr.m3u)

JFK listing:

Note that the combined feed is the same mountpoint as the original JFK Tower feed.

Dave.  Which one was the old feed that was already there?  I'm also curious as to why you used the priority function.

While I was in New York yesterday I split JFK Tower into 3 feeds:

It seems like some communications on a particular frequency (I think it's 123.9) on the combined feed are repeated 4-5 seconds after they're originally broadcast in lower quality (like a delayed repetition). It could be temporary or just me... I'm not really sure. Just thought I'd make a note of it.

No, that's when they simulcast on both tower frequencies.  Unfortunately on the combined feed sometimes the tracks get out of sync.  That will be improved in time.

Because ultimately it's a better setup.  The old Tower feed was on a single scanner - so when it scans between the 3 Tower frequencies, communications are lost.  This way people who want to listen to one or the other can do that.  If they want to hear it all, they can listen to combined.  And the archives are now separate since the receivers are split up.  If there is interest, I can set up a feed with priority the other way around, or one with everything just mixed together.  But too many feeds can just get confusing, so I wanted to hear feedback on this before I do anything else.

Isn't there a way to listen to separate feeds simultaneously ? So why not 3 separate feeds with ONE frequency on each ? Wouldn't the coverage be the same and the listener could choose one or any combination of the 3 they wanted to listen to ?

Because in this particular location the number of receivers is already at max (due to a number of factors that won't change any time soon).  And I am not willing to devote three receivers to Tower.  Two is sufficient.

As it is the listener can listen to the two main Towers separately.  These thread was about the combined feed.

Sorry I thought when you said "3 feeds" you meant you were already using 3 separate radios. So you are using two radios wired together with some sort of priority switching system (?) to give 3 feeds.

Right...and FYI...the priority switching happens in software.  I can easily set up the following additional feeds:

- one with priority on the other radio
- one with a straight mix of the two radios (eventually in stereo, but now only available in mono)

This thread reminds me of a Herbert Swope quote:
"I can't give you a sure-fire formula for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: try to please everybody all the time."
