Don't disobey ATC's instructions!
« on: August 14, 2005, 20:39:25 UTC »
I won't go case specific, but over the past few months, I've heard on local freq's here and online on LiveATC from Toronto where some pilots decide to go 'on their own'.  I've heard a pilot who deviated a few times and ATC really stuck a bee at him.  And this afternoon, I heard one pilot who failed to climb runway heading for a SID departure.  Are there REAL significant consequences for situations likes these?

In most cases a controller will give the deviating pilot a prompt tongue-lashing and send him on his way.  In the case of a BLATENT violation or deviation resulting in loss of separation, these cases are almost always reported to Flight Standards (in the US anyway) for follow up.  If you ever hear a phone number being given out on the frequency, it's usually to obtain the pilot information to submit a report.

I'd venture a guess that 95% of pilot deviations are not reported by ATC.  And yes, there are significant consequences for pilots not following ATC instructions.

Often times even the phone number treatment, at least in the US, is nothing more than an extended ATC tongue lashing, followed by a serving of humble pie baked by the pilot.  :)

You also hear phone numbers when there are runway incursions, for example with that US Airways flight at Logan on June 9. :D

I have heard of aircraft landing an IFR flight at the wrong airport being requested to report to the ATCT to fill out some 'paperwork'
