Europes leading airline skids off runway.

Ryanair 737-800 skidded off the end of the runway ,after heavy rainfall.

The chairman of the chamber of commerce described the runway  " a slick tarmac".  Are there any slight grooves in the runway so the plane's tryes can have a grip and do not skid?

I dont mean this runway in particular but runways in general.

Yes, they are called grooves. One of the main factors in the accident with the TAM Airbus in Sao Paulo was the fact that the company that resurfaced the runway didn't groove it. If you ever get to see a heavily used runway up close. You can see just how deep grooves can be. They are very pronounced in depth.

Is it a requirement by the aviation authories to put these grooves in or is it up to the airport?

AFAIK it is not required to groove a runway... but it helps to remove standing water in rain showers. Anything that gives good friction to landing planes is permitted. (IIRC EHAM has non-standard runways that drain water without grooves)

Here is a picture of the plane off the runway............................Knowing Ryanair they will use this as some sort of advertising, something like   "We are eager to get you there on time no matter what".
