Title: Impressive work at LGA today in high winds.
Post by: ATCWanAaB on March 20, 2008, 04:27:14 PM
Listening to the LGA tower feed right now. Impressive job in the high winds using runway 31.

"Delta 448, runway 31 position and hold, traffic on a 2 mile final for 31"

really fun to listen to.

It was like that just north of LaGuardia up at White Plains, NY, one of the busiest class D airports in the US.  While waiting ninth in line I got to watch quite a few impressive landings (and some squirrelly takeoffs, including my own) in winds gusting to 40 kts.

The tower controller was also locking and loading each of us there, too - Just as an aircraft touched down, we all were getting "aircraft XXX, position and hold runway 34, regional jet on a three mile final, be READY to go."

I'll tell you what:  Some winds are strong but smooth.  Other winds are strong and mean (wind shear, strong downdrafts, moderate to severe turbulence).  In my opinion these winds in the Northeast US today were the latter.

(looking forward to the dedicated White Plains feed coming soon.)

thats usually how they run their operations on a daily basis, as soon as the departure passes the intersection, the arrival crosses the threshold. amazing.

Flew over JFK today at 5500...  I counted 40 planes waiting to take off 31L, about half of which were lined up on 4R/22L.  Just as one started rolling, the next one would be getting in position.  Today was not a fun day to fly.

This is also why it would be great to have someone down in SoCal pop up a SAN feed (I would myself if I were down there). Most airport ops by a single runway airport in the entire US... In and out of there is great to watch, as they do the above every day.
