Title: 2 Questions from a Newbie...How High? What Type?
Post by: jgn1981 on August 13, 2011, 10:07:52 PM
Greetings Fellow Enthusiasts!
I'm located roughly 9 miles from McGuire AFB in Eastampton NJ
I was wondering if anyone can help with a couple of questions..
What type of antenna can I place on the roof to hear both ATC and the Pilots?
Also, will the top of my home be high enough to receive both communications, 9 miles out?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Who knows, maybe in time we'll get a live feed out of this!
Thanks!
JGN

Probably not.  That's going to be too far away to hear aircraft on the ground and it could be too far away to hear the controller depending on the terrain.

That's going to be a stretch.  If the controllers' antennas are on 50-60' towers you may be able to pick them up, but planes on the ground may be hard to hear. You'll need to put your antenna up at least 30' and if there are hills or downtown is between you and the airport, you will have problems.
