1R/1L at SFO

Does anybody know if aircraft use 1R or 1L for landing  at SFO?

Yes they do. But only maybe 7-10 times a year.

When it's howling out of the north, yes. They run visual approaches over the bay, heading for rwy 28L/R, then, at or near the San Mateo Bridge, circle southwest to land on 1L/R.  What's truly exciting is when there's a lower ceiling and they can't run visuals...then it's the ILS 28L or R with a circle to rwy 1L/R.

I had the opportunity to try the ILS 28L circle 1R in a full motion 717 sim (the recently closed Alteon facility at KLGB). I can tell you that keeping it within the maximum circling distance is not for the faint of heart or weak of bowel.

There used to be a site that showed live radar tracks for SFO (part of a noise monitoring system, I think)...it was truly fascinating watching them route the 28/1 circles. Sadly the site no longer exists, last time I checked.
