Push-back procedure means that the doors close to the plane and the jet way is moved so that the plane can back up and head to the runway. Another name for that is cross-checking.

I would guess that closing the doors and having stairs and airbridges out of the way is a prerequisite to start a push-back.

The push-back is when the plane is pushed back from the stand by a truck; it will be pushed into a position where it can taxi out ahead.

I think Hakan is more interested in the technical part. So - unfortunately in German only - :

One way (slow) a truck with a bar pushes the aircraft out of the stand/gate. The other  way (faster): A special "lifting-truck" lifts the nose-wheel for push-back ops...
