Heathrow closed? With 2 parallel runways? According to everywhere I've read so far, operations are running on 9L/27R while they're working on getting the emergency cleaned up..

BL.

"The runway was initially closed, but reopened later to take-offs only. The north runway remained open throughout the incident." - BBC website.
But still, I can imagine what the delays are like. There's a hella lot of diversions and cancellations.

I know very well that UK ATC recordings aren't allowed, but I'm sure someone has them somewhere.

If anybody has any recordings, could they email me them? (chris_z99[at]hotmail.com)

I'd really appreciate it and would love hear them :)

ps. I won't tell any one :P

And if by some SHEER LUCK you come across it, be sure to share and post it to the 'ATC/Aviation Audio Clips' section of this forum. :)

The video from a CNN affiliate gives a pretty good overview of the a/c damage.  It's the video associated with the story "Crash passenger: We just dropped"

Here's the link: http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/01/17/heathrow.witnesses/index.html#cnnSTCVideo

"The BBC said an unidentified Heathrow worker told the broadcaster that he had spoken to the pilot. The pilot said, according to the worker, that the plane's electronics had failed and that he was forced to glide it to the ground"[/i]

The first official report points to an engine failure:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/7196945.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/7196945.stm)

Quote
At approximately 600ft and two miles from touch down, the autothrottle demanded an increase in thrust from the two engines, but the engines did not respond.

Following further demands for increased thrust from the autothrottle, and subsequently the flight crew moving the throttle levers, the engines similarly failed to respond.
