Is there anyone on this forum that has taken the AT-SAT examination? I have to take it here in May and was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers. Thanks

I took it about a year ago while being a guinnea pig for the FAA. I thought it was pretty easy, mostly computer-friendly stuff as I recall. Try to get as familiar as you can with the number pad on your kepboard, that'll help in the "vectoring" game. There is another game which tests your ability to multi-task, try to keep a good mental picture of what's happening at any given time as the game will stop to ask you awareness questions randomly.
Other than that just go with whatever practice excercises are being offered by your school (I assume you're a UND grad). Good luck, and don't stress about it, it's very easy.

To get a good overview what to expect from AT-SAT, have a look at atcprep.com, there is a description of most of the tests.

took it about a year ago. its not really a test you can study or prepare for. the only real prep you can do for it is a good night sleep and a hardy breakfast the morning you take it.
The test itself is not that bad all. I didnt do as well as i thought i would, but i stll passed with a pretty decent score. My only advice is that you dont get discouraged or upset, if you know you got something or did something wrong.
If you have any other questions, ask away!
Other than that, best of luck and I assure you that you will do fine!

I've taken it, scored well and have yet to hear anything in quite some time. Isn't there a (for lack of a better term) controller shortage?
-
yep! major controller shortage, but still under a hiring freeze. Won't hear anything until Fiscal Year 2011, in which the FAA will get their new numbers, evaluate them, and then maybe start re-hiring!

One thing to keep in mind is that a controller shortage is not the same thing as a trainee shortage. They've been pumping so many new people into the system over the past few years many facilities are quite full of new hires going to training program. It takes anywhere from 6 months to several years to get checked out and become an actual controller. That creates a bottle neck in the OJT part of training.

Is there officially a hiring freeze or is that just a rumor?
-
sykocus,
that is very true! the mass influx of new people into the system, has caused this freeze. I am hiree, but right as i got all my clearances, i got held up by this current freeze, so I am really hoping that things gets sorted out ASAP!
