This is a famous set EWR 4L is HOWYA, 4R is DOOIN. HOWYA DOOIN. Also I found a set of fixes 50 miles to the SW of Philly named JIMEE and FALON. They are right next to each other.

Yup, I've seen SALLT and PEPER - ILS 2 KHVN
JIMME & FALLN south of PHL
HOWYA - 4L @ KEWR
DOOIN - 4R @ KEWR
I believe there are plenty more out there, just can't think off the top of my head...

Who would have guessed, the FAA actually has a sense of humor!

Great topic!

Here's one I noticed when flying into MCI in flight sim...

http://myairplane.com/databases/approach/pdfs/00780I1R.PDF

The inner marker for the 23R ILS at IND is WINOT...for those who always ask "Why?" The middle marker for 23R is LATTE for the coffee drinkers...although one of the controllers pronounces it LATT-ie...think of a Scot saying LASS-ie.

I'm sure I'll think of more.

Matt

Actually, it's a computer in France, or maybe it's Switzerland that issues fix names now on a world wide basis now.

So your first guess was correct. The FAA is still looking for their sense of humor.

Lexx..not quite the case.
See the following ( British) link for some fascinating insights to fixes and reporting point names.
Especially take a look at the History section.

Well it's nice to see ICAO (Paris France) is taking local geography suggestions into account before issuing new designators. Although I think it was fixes we were talking about.

I was just looking at some brand new GPS and GPS overlay approach plates, and they're still full of these very odd names.

Maybe nobody bothered to suggest something to the boys in Paris.

Oh well

Northern Ontario fixes
« Reply #9 on: July 07, 2005, 11:27:04 AM »
Man alive.  This topic rocks.  I had one Toronto controller who asked an Air Canada Jazz pilot about a requested fix on his final approach.  The pilot requested to Ubedo (assuming the correct spelling).  The controller was surprised and literally teased the pilot on the air about that fix.  It's supposed to be attached to our runway 21 VOR approach, via the 12 DME arc or something like that.  On our 11 or 12 DME fix to runway 28, the fix there is the AVTOD.  We also have the RIDIK fix which is 13 DME fix for runway 03 and the Intermediate Fix (I.F.) for runway 21 is the BUDAR.  So with all that, you have AVTOD, UBEDO, RIDIK, BUDAR and much more.  In North Bay, there is a YELIK fix and Sudbury has the AVORA fix.  These controllers all the time to pronounce and spell the fixes correctly.  In Kapuskaking, there is the KASNG beacon and the DOBIE fix too.

Clarification on local fix and Montreal ACC fix
« Reply #10 on: July 07, 2005, 08:38:20 PM »
I just thought I would update this for funny fix folks lol.  While listening to Montreal ACC, especially at this time of the evening when most flights are headed eastbound via the Atlantic tracks prior to Gander's airspace, I always hear the MUSVA fix being call up.

I am also monitoring the cassette recording about our local airway fixes about the UBEDO.  I finally made sense of the pilot who mentioned it's the 11 DME (nautical mile) 179 degree radial fix for the runway 21 VOR approach.
