FSX Demo
« on: August 09, 2006, 09:26:20 PM »
Well, it's out today at 00:00Z! I'm not too excited tho, I'll have to see when it's done.

I wrote this on another forum:

For anyone who likes the IFR- this won't change much from FS9. I think this edition's purpose is primarily to indroduce anyone who hasn't bought a product in the series yet or anyone who never flies online to the game. While it does at jetways, baggage carts, lav trucks, etc... none of this will be as realistic as some of the 3rd party scenery is today. They have not made improvements in (or at least they kept these improvements hidden from public): ATC, aircraft panel and systems (FMC/TCAS/MCP) functionality and realism, and overall airliner/large aircraft realism/playability.

VFR flights, however will become much more enjoyable. With Vista, scenery will dramatically change. They have boats, cars, people, detailed buildings in the VIDEO, but who says they will be all over the earth? Maybe you can only see those things in the missions/those areas. Do the animals wander all over africa and their movements carefully scripted? or are they in one area and wander aimlessly through trees like ghosts? They're not saying exactly what the new multiplayer system will involve but I hope to god it's not an instable browser like the one in BF2.

BTW I'm getting 400kbps at filefront. Which is about 5x the rate at most other places.

Here's my review... I posted it first on a BF2 forum so ignore the references if you like:

"Wow. I don't like it at all. It's very bad...

The scenery is incomplete. Multiple islands are available. There's boats and all. Some vehicles are just axles and wheels... The aircraft textures are crappy (whenever the recog lite flashes it changes the texture). The water is like the water in FarCry and it's everywhere so it slows down your system. The scenery is bad- They have a satellite image, but very few houses (they did a good job with hotels), the trees are worse than they are in FS9. The controls don't interface well (or at all I guess you could say) with my CH products yoke and pedals (specifically the brakes are screwed up). When landing the CRJ all that stuff (radios, copilot) is made specifically for that mission, you don't hear it anywhere else, at any other airport. I couldn't take it anymore so I quit. If they gonna release a demo, at least make it a full version of only a portion of the product - It's like releasing a BF2 demo with just people and tanks but no guns. Everything is incomplete (just like BF2 on it's release day). Very dissapointing...."

That's why it's a demo. It is very unlike microsoft to release a demo at all. Demo's alot of time are released with all the bugs in them and then they fix(or lets hope to god they fix) the problems, and remember the flashing of the cars and plane parts has alot to do with it running straight off the computer instead of some on the computer and some of what it needs off the cd so it runs smoother. This game still has a month and half till release(oct.18) so that gives microsoft plenty of time to fix the problems. Besides i'm mostly buying the game for multiplayer so I can switch between pilot, first officer, and ATC(in the deluxe version only). However I do agree that the atc(from free flying and missions) is still quite crappy. My only guess with that is if they had it almost exact, normal people wouldn't know what the hell was going on.

We'll see. I still think it's just a bunch of eye-candy and no real core improvements towards the realism of the "game".

The scenery is incomplete.
Well it IS a demo.
And yes they left stuff out of even the limited area of this demo to cut down on size.
Quote
Some vehicles are just axles and wheels...
Another thing they left out, which is already fixed in the public beta.
Quote
The aircraft textures are crappy (whenever the recog lite flashes it changes the texture).
That is not crappy textures, but a bug, which is fixed.

The water is like the water in FarCry and it's everywhere so it slows down your system.
Well you can scale that down.
Quote
The scenery is bad- They have a satellite image, but very few houses
Err, there are certainly many more houses than in FS9 - if you use the high settings.
Quote
the trees are worse than they are in FS9.
Matter of taste I guess, but I really disagree.
There are more trees, and they seem (to me) more life-like than in FS9.

The controls don't interface well (or at all I guess you could say) with my CH products yoke and pedals (specifically the brakes are screwed up).
Another thing which is only in the Demo.

When landing the CRJ all that stuff (radios, copilot) is made specifically for that mission, you don't hear it anywhere else, at any other airport.
That's why these missions are there.
For the normal flying you have MS ATC - well, or multiplayer.

I couldn't take it anymore so I quit. If they gonna release a demo, at least make it a full version of only a portion of the product
And have what file-size?
Besides, for pre-release demos it is pretty normal to have a quantity of bugs.
Quote
Very dissapointing....
Well it was a free demo, so I guess you didn't lose that much, hrmm? :)

Regards,

Robert

I just don't like the idea of releasing a "preview" of your product that isn't to exciting.

Most developers/publishers try to use demos to inspire people to buy the product...

If a "lay" person had just downloaded the demo and not read what you just posted, they would not really be interested in the product. I know that this demo really dissapoints and turns people off. That really is not the way to go. Sometimes it takes just one moment to get a costumer to not want to buy a product.

It is way too easy for Microsoft/Aces to lose potential costumers of the FS series, like me with a demo like this...

I actually think enough "casual observers" will just see the pretty water, nice autogen and great sky, and still consider buying this sim.

Really, with every new version of FS people predicted doom and gloom for the product, and every time people turned out to actually buy the thing - and with or without a demo, it is not really different.

I for one am just glad MS offered us this early insight, and I have not a single issue whatsoever with bugs in free that pre-release demo.
Talk about bugs in the final product...well, that would be different.

Regards,

Robert

I agree... even if it only looks prettier I'd be inclined to buy it.  When flying in the simulator, the scenery plays a big part.  It's not like a real-world situation where you have a co-pilot to talk to, etc, and visuals always have a good psychological effect too.

I haven't had the chance to get FSX yet but the screenshots look promising.
