Frequency Request - ZAU
« on: December 30, 2021, 07:54:22 AM »
Hi folks,

First and foremost, I appreciate this community and appreciate the lengths everyone has gone to in order to provide this amazing tool for our use.

I had a request that I was hoping to fulfill. I am currently a controller at ZAU and am looking for a live feed of one of my sectors, VHF 134.02. I plan on using this as a training tool for our trainees so they can listen to traffic and watch airplanes in real time on FlightAware (we have training suspended due to COVID so we have some guys sitting idle). With this, our trainees would be able to "monitor" real traffic with audio to help further their training, ultimately creating a safer environment. If anyone can assist, myself and our trainees would greatly appreciate this.

Thank you so much!
- TH

Hi TH-

Is 134.02 still Sector 45 Roberts High Sector? RCAG still Roberts, IL? Or has that moved somewhere else? Also, where is the BUEC site?

We can try to see if our Lafayette or Champaign receiver sites can hear the ground transmitter.

Dave

Hey Dave,

Yes it is still the Roberts 45 High sector. The BUEC is in Sibley, IL (QIB).

It would be awesome if they could pick it up! I’m looking at maybe getting my own setup down the road and contributing to this community soon.

avgeek123,

Is ZAU41, 128.400, used much ? Checking my notes 41 sits over 45 and covers FL350 and above when required. The controller on 134.025 used to simulcast on 128.400 when 41 was combined into 45. Is this still the case ? Where is the RCAG for 128.400 located ? Might be within range of another LiveATC site and useful if they do still simulcast on it ?

Hello! Happy new year. ZAU41 is no longer used; ZAU45 covers FL240-FL999. I am not sure where the RCAG for 128.400 is, unfortunately.

I made a mistake on the frequency, it was 124.800 (not 128.400). Latest info. I could find is it's a backup frequency for ZAU45 with the RCAG located at Bloomington Il. I seem to recall a few years ago someone here mentioning it was simulcalsting with 134.025 ? There is a Bloomington LiveATC feed, maybe 124.800 could be added as a test ?

124.8 comes in great at the KBMI receiver site. The only issue is bleedover from Tower on 124.6 since the receiver is very close to KBMI and SDR doesn't have the ability to filter between 124.6 and 124.8. ZAU controller was heard but he must have been working two frequencies since aircraft were not heard.

Thanks for checking, so still simulcasting on 124.800, the aircraft are probably on 134.025. Too bad about the splashover, a dedicated feed scanning the 124.800/134.025 combo should work perfect as per the OP request.

We're working on adding an appropriate (non-SDR) receiver for this. May be a week or so before it is online. We will also add an SDR to separate Approach from Ground/Tower again.

Donations are always welcome for those who will find this useful.

Thanks,
Dave

Further info:

1) As long as 124.8 and 134.025 are "combined," this will work. For the ZAU controller...how often is that pair of frequencies not used? Are aircraft sometimes using 124.8?
2) I also checked 119.225 Sector 58 Lincoln Low since it isn't too far away (Leroy, IL RCAG?). No controllers heard...occasional pilot traffic. Didn't seem very busy at the time. Is that sector every combined with another? If so, which one(s)?

Thanks,
Dave

According to the info I have (a bit out of date) Sector 58 combines into Sector 55 Burlington. 2014 ZAU Sector Maps Attached.

Thank you so much, dave. I really appreciate it. Also, with 119.225, that is the Lincoln sector and should be the only frequency they use.
