EWR - New Configuration!!!!!
« on: June 27, 2007, 10:33:57 PM »
All,

I am pleased to announce that several frequencies have been added to the EWR Feed.

The feed has been converted to Stereo.  Panning the balance of your audio player willl allow you to hear feeds from 2 scanners.

On the Right side, we continue to have EWR Liberty Tower (118.3) Priority, with New York Depart. on 119.2

On the Left side we now have several Approach Freqs:
125.5
120.15
125.85

I am sure there will be some issues to work out over the next few days....

Enjoy!

Please feel free to provide comments/feedback about the EWR feeds on this forum.

I want to make these feeds the best they can be.

Thanks,

Thanks....  That makes me feel really good....

For those that are interested, a little Feed Background:
The feed is hosted at site that overlooks the Newark/Manhattan Skyline (not my house, I wish I lived up there with such a view!!!!!)

We use the view to operate a site that has a live image of the Manhattan Skyline and raises money for charity through google ads: http://www.newarktower.com

Yesterday was a particularly hot day in NY/NJ and I made several configuration errors during the afternoon in reconfiguring the feed.  This necessitated several trips back to the feed site, which (unfortunately for the systems) is currently in an unairconditioned room on the top floor.  I don't do well in the heat, so needless to say, it was very difficult for me.

So, in short:  Thank you for acknowledging the work.  It gives me great satisfaction!!!!!!

Nice job, the frequency mix you have works well, busy but not overloaded with too many frequencies like some setups. Just wondering about your reception though, appears to be some computer interference/noise and aircraft reception range is poor, I also notice you can't hear the controller on 120.150, although controller reception on the other frequencies is very good. 120.150 must be transmitting from a different location ? I'm not complaining, just trying to provide some honest feedback. Great to have the feed available, thanks for the effort. DJ

Jetscan1,

Definitely don't hear you as complaining!

You are right.  The scanner that I initially used (and still do) for 118.3, 119.2 is far better than the one I am using for the approach Freqs.

I think I need to look into a) connecting 1 antenna to 2 scanners or b) buying another of the better antennas.

I am not an RF expert by any stretch.  Any suggestions are VERY welcome.

What type of scanners/antennas are you using ? Just listening now started hearing the controller on 120.150 but very weak and intermittent. DJ

JetScan1,

The Tower and Depart. freq antenna is a discone antenna from Radio Shack that has a 1ft top antenna, underneath, a series of small antennae horizontally placed around the circumference.
Underneath that are several large antennae pointing down at an angle flaring outward.

The Approach Freqs. is a cheap 4 ft (approx) roof-mount from radio shack.

So both antennas are outside ? Your reception should be a lot better than what you are getting if you are using outside antennas. Are there buildings blocking the view to the west ? Also do you have 128.550 entered in the approach scanner ? This used to be the outer approach frequency, has it been replaced by 125.850 ? DJ

JetScan1,

You caught me  :-D :-D

Both antennas are currently inside the top floor next to windows that have an unobstructed view of the entire skyline.  Since I use someone else's property,I couldn't push them to let me mount antennas outside.

Also, it is possible I am missing 128.55.

Okay inside antennas, I'm guessing they are close to the computer as well which would explain the interference. The Manhatten skyline is east, the traffic you are listening to is all to the west (south through north), what's your view like to the west (south through north), I'm guessing here, but maybe if you moved the antennas so they were facing out to the west you would get much better reception (maybe not practical). What about 128.550, is that in there, it sounds like it is, unless they are using a new frequency ? DJ

You raise some excellent points.  I think I have some options to try, but gently, with the folks who let me use their space.

I will keep you posted!!!!!

Thanks,

Jonathan  -  Thanks very much for your hard work in this.  When you get a chance, can you (or the administrators etc.)  please update the Class B list so that I can get the URL for it? Either that, or if you can post it here, I'd appreciate it. Otherwise, I don't know how to start listening to it.

Thanks much again.
