when I first purchased my Icom a-22 radio I decided to engrave it at a local trophy shop I used my pilot certificate number was that a good Idea?

Why wouldn't it be?? Any means of identifying it if it is stolen and recovered helps.

If you don't want the reseller or a future purchaser to be able to look you up, just use an engraving tool and cover the number up. If you don't want to do that, you can have your personal information like your address be removed from the public pilot database maintained by the FAA.
If you're concerned about the value of the radio, I'm not so sure an engraving mark would make it worth much less. People buy those things for utility, not necessarily aesthetics.

If it were not for Mrs. Pilot I would buy it in a heart beat right now! Engraving or not :-D
When I was in the Military I defaced items like this to keep theft risk to a minimum.
