Extremely rare RWY 1R approaches KSFO 2/9/20 (video)
« on: February 09, 2020, 10:23:43 PM »
If you want to hear a rare event, 30 knot plus right cross on RWY 28 at SFO, had planes cleared 1R for several hours this afternoon. Very low terrain. A rare sight to behold. Will post pics and amazing video asap. I was told hasnt happened in two years. There are not even any publically published approaches available for 1R.

Longer than 2 years, I can tell you that. I want to say I can count on one hand the times it's happened in the almost 20 years now that I've been in NorCal. But having 30-35kt winds without any gusts, it's been (northern California) bitterly cold. you're right though; it's a rarity that they land the 1s. It may do you some good to grab the ATIS from the archives and post that, so everyone can see what they were dealing with..

The two year figure came from one of the neighbors were we were viewing from. The last I observed (live audio) was 5 years ago

https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL2349/history/20141230/1841Z/KATL/KSFO

Yesterday as I was watching:  Winds 360  30 knots  gust 37 knots

Any of the archives on either side of this one will include clearance to " 28R then circle to land 1R"  or even some "RNAV 1R" as there are some approach procedures at certain airlines for this runway
