Is this the right 1/8" cable?
« on: May 28, 2010, 11:14:19 UTC »
I am a bit confused, my scanner has 3.5 mm earphone jack, but convertin 1/8" comes to 3.1mm   This is a cable from my CD player so I can connect it on my Music Stand. I tried it in my scanner, fits perfectly. Now...is this the right cable to connect my scanner with my PC? Where should I plug the other end, in the mic or speakers jack? Any software I can  hear the frequencies, or even to decode some ACARS?

It's likely the right cable, but the output of your scanner (*depending on the radio you have*), is not likely to be stereo, but your sound card input is, so if you used this cable you would be inputting only one channel of audio to whatever PC app you are running.

If this is the case you could feed both channels by getting a "stereo to mono adapter" (female to male connection) and plugging that into your scanner first before blugging this cable into it. Radio Shack and similar stores would carry that.

You'll want to keep the volume on the scanner quite low if you just plug into your line level input on the sound card.

The scanner I have is Win-108 (I got that one after all, mint contion for around 10$) and it has only one earphone jack, here's what it says about it in the manual:

"The Ear marked socket is used for connection of a suitable earphone, pair of headphones, or external loudspeaker. The correct impedance for external phones is 8 to 16 ohms, and the connector is a standard 3.5mm jack plug."

I have a laptop and I have to jacks on it, mic and headphones. Which shall I use to connect the scanner with this cable? I can't damage it, can't I?

That's exactly what I use to connect my scanner to my PC.   To see if you need a mono-stereo adapter, simply plug in a pair of stereo headphones or earbuds into your scanner.  If you hear the transmissions in both ears then you're good to go.

You can connect the other end to either your mic or line-in jack on your laptop.  Line-in is preferable as it's a little easier to control the volume.  Either way, start with the volume on the scanner set pretty low, then tweak it up until you get a strong signal without clipping.

I plugged my Nokia earphones from my mobile and I only hear things in one ear so it is mono. So I basicly need the adapter now so I will not have the other silent line in my sound card? Other than that, I don't see why?

Which software do you use to get the audio?

Can somebody tell me which software I can use to listen to the output? And why I have to use so much SQ, otherwise there is a lot of noise? I can barely get reception!

If you just want to plug it into Line In on the sound card and listen to it, you don't need any software.  Just open the built-in Windows Volume Control and make sure the Line In level is turned up and not muted.

Yes it sounds like you'll want the adapter as suggested earlier unless you want to hear only one channel.
