Could it have anything to do with all the disruption of traffic due to the snowstorm on the coast?
I was at the drive-through window at Wendy's about 15 minutes ago, and when I rolled down the window, I heard an aircraft overhead. I just caught a glimpse of what I thought was a 747 as it disappeared into the clouds. Haven't seen one of those around PIT in quite a while...

I remember when the JAL charter flight for the Steelers came in(744). I loved to see it., im wondering what that emirates plane is.
-
You should take a drive on over to the FBO AVCenter and see what it is.

If you're talking about the guy working in the tower last night, he's not new he's actually been there for years. They call him Radio because he used to be a radio DJ in Pittsburgh and you can still see its influence on his radio technique. He's extremely smart, and the nicest guy I've ever met. Not sure about the equip problems, I'll look into that for you.
And yes, I have a couple of pics, I'll send them to you.

Yes, i know that the guy in the tower has been ther for a long time. The guy on APP/DEP. back in 2000 NPR radio news did a recording about airport and they chose PIT to do it in and ther is a recording of him. I love to hear the traffice. alot more than then compared to today.

Anyone here old enough to remember a controller at PIT who would always close his conversion with "adios". I think his name was Frank.
US AIR 230 turn left heading 290, cleared for the ILS runway 28 Left approach, contact tower 119.1...adios.

Did he work there before the strike?
-
Yes I believe so. It's been awhile....Back when Wiske was WARWOOD...Nesto was NEWTON...Grace was GRAHAM and Cutta was CALCUTTA.

Wow, that was before my time but I think I know the guy you're talking about. He got fired in the PATCO strike then rehired at YNG in '98. If it's the same guy I'm thinking of, he's a Sup at ERI now and is definitely one of the most exciting controllers I've ever heard. His name isn't Frank though, it's Dan...and he does say "Adios" alot.
-
I'm pretty sure his name was Frank....at least that's what many of the pilots would call him.
Somewhere I have audio cassette tapes that I would record from my scanner 30 years ago! I'll have to dig them up. Thats back when there was a runway 5-23 at PIT.
This site has rekindled my air traffic control interest!

That is the old airport, so thats like 93 and past

Ok, I've got the straight story--The original "adios" guy at PIT was indeed named Frank. Dan, who worked there at the same time, picked it up from him. (Source: Ed from YNG, who's also ex-PATCO, from PIT at that time, and who works with my wife...)
JD, have you ever heard Dan called "Quatro"? (Because he's completely at home working traffic landing in four different directions at once.)

I never have yet....we call him "showtime," for the same reasons. I'll be sure to call him that next time I see him, he'll probably get a kick out of it. And thanks for the clarification.

I know Ed too...real nice guy, although I'm still a little bitter he didn't drop some of his home-grown tomatos off at the tower last summer. Next time you see him tell him the people over at BVI say hello and wish him well.
-
I'll pass that along.
Yes, Ed is a heckuva nice guy!
As for the tomatoes--I didn't get any either, but I did get four tomato plants. Just had to grow em myself... :D
