Difficulty Hearing Centers
« on: January 14, 2006, 11:45:35 AM »
I like to listen to ATC on my scanner and I am having difficulty picking up ZNY, I usually hear the aircraft once they are handed off to ZNY from say MDT.  I only hear one side of the conversation.  Is anyone familiar with where the transmitters are for ZNY in this area, and does anyone know of any ZNY frequencies I may be able to hear both sides of transmissions.  I live in Mechanicsburg, PA.  Thanks for any help.

For transmitter locations use http://www.liveatc.net/downloads/ZNY_LTA0401.pdf

I can't remember where Mechanicsburg is, but check the towns for those transmitters. Most likely you dont live in range for any of the transmitters.

I'm surprised you can't hear any controllers on 132.200 and 133.475, both transmitting from Big Flat, about 25 miles (statute) from Mechanicsburg. Unless you are too close to the ridge to the southwest ?

Thanks everyone for the information.  That is probably it that I am too close to the ridge.  But, no I am only able to pick up the aircraft on 132.2 for ZNY.  That is probably the closest transmitter since that is the frequency that KMDT uses to hand aircraft off to ZNY.  Thanks again.

That's a cool picture... I see that pictures/map is from Google - but how did you get that view, and get it to draw the lines, etc??  :)

senduhelp, I'm sure you have done this but just to make sure. Have you turned the squelch halfway and then all the way down. If that doesn't work, then you'll have to get an antenna on the roof, a Discone normally does the trick. Im sure you'll pick them up pretty clearly at that time.

You need to download the program called "Google Earth". The control panel used to tilt and zoom around is pretty straight forward. It's free and you can download it from this site.

But a warning, it's almost as addictive as listening to Live ATC.

PHL Approach,
No, actually I haven't tried to turn the squelch, should I just turn it half way and then leave it all the way down to listen?  I haven't heard of doing that.  Thanks.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Lowering the squelch enables transmissions to be picked up at a much higher sensitivity, in other terms farther distances. So if you turn it halfway down, you won't get the constant static that comes when you turn it down to minimum. Obviously with the squelch down you will get a constant static. With that, you'll loose your ability to scan and also it WILL get annoying. But give it a try, you just might be able to pick up those ZNY sectors.
