What causes these outages? Are they usually temporary?

Could be any number of things.
Site conditions (i.e. power out, internet down, antenna blown over, receiver(scanner) down, etc)
and usually temporary until any of the services that were out are restored from a service stand point.
if it's a physical issue, antenna down, coax broken, then the volunteer who provides the site will rectify.

and yes, they do know when sites are down.

Hope that helps
John

When the issue with a feed is with the radio side of a feed setup (antenna, scanner/SDR, coax cable, etc.), this won't cause a feed to go down.  You would still be able to connect to the feed but there simply would be very little audio or no audio at all.  When a feed is down, as is the case with these ZOB sectors and KPCW as well, this means that the feed setup is not connected to the network or it's connected but not "talking" to LiveATC.  This could be caused by a number of things: bad Raspberry Pi, corrupted SD card in the Pi, bad network cable, etc.

LiveATC is aware of the issue and is looking into it.  Keep in mind that no feed is guaranteed to be up 24/7/365 and that any feed can go away at any time for reasons beyond the control of LiveATC.  Hope this clears things up.

The Cleveland Center feeds are back online again.  Turns out the power to the feed setup just needed to be cycled off and then back on again.  Should be good now.
