Channel 4 UK - New Aircraft Graveyard Ident
« on: November 07, 2010, 04:04:25 PM »
Was just watching TV and this came on - So I googled it to show you guys.

It's an ident they use here in the UK when introducing the shows on Channel 4.

If you look closely, when he says "on four" you can see the aircraft are arranged in a 4 formation.

Lots of 747s, 737 and various other craft!

Can anyone identify the location?

In the USA it's Mojave, California - Airplane Graveyard
Mojave Airport. East of town, north of Mojave-Barstow Hwy.

In the UK they have this:

There are several airplane graveyards in the American Southwest. In addition to Mojave, there is Victorville (KVCV) in California, and Goodyear (KGYR) in Arizona just to name a couple.

I knew all about Mojave, Goodyear etc. before I posted the link. I was just wondering which one it was  :-D
Still just thought it was kind of neat to be sitting watching TV and this came on.

Actually, I instantly thought of Joeyb747 because of the KLM and various other 74's there  :-)

Pretty sure that was KMHV. If it were something like a 757 or 767, I would say possibly KIGM (DHL has a fair number of theirs parked there, along with a couple ex-TWA L1011s). But 74s? definitely KMHV.

I would agree it is probably KMHV.

And thanks for thinking of me ETC76!  8-)

I love all the old birds...it's kind of sad that these graveyards are one of the last places to see the classics...all be it on their death beds, most of these birds will meet the fate of the cutters torch, never to fly again. A few will get out alive and get another chance at life, but most will not...

Most people are not aware of KVCV. They actually have quite an operation going down there. KVCV has quite a nice assortment of aircraft, including several Boeing 747 variants!

See the pics below:

#1 is a wide shot of the yard Everything from DC-8s, DC-9s, Airbus, 727s, 737s, 747s, 757s, and 767s are visible in this pic.

#2 shows more birds, including DC-10s, Airbus a310s, 737s, 747s, 757s, and MD-80s.

#3 shows an assortment of 747s, as well as 727s, 737s, 757s, Airbus A310, DC-10s and MD-80s.

#4 is a favorite of mine, showing among others, EX-Delta L-1011s, DC-8s, DC-10s, 727s, and I count 13 747s.

A few more pick from KVCV:

#1 shows that United has several B744s stored at KVCV.

#2 Several older 747 examples are also in storage at KVCV. This one is Boeing 747-287B 5N-NNN (cn 21189/274) in Kabo colors.

#3 Several special aircraft call KVCV home, including GEs testbed aircraft, Boeing 747-121 N747GE (cn 19651/25), she served Pan Am as N744PA.

#4 Tanker 910 also calls KVCV home, as it's location provides short flights to fire-prone areas of Southern California. This aircraft is DC-10-10 N450AX (cn 46942/162). She served as a passenger bird for National and Pan Am as N69NA. Then briefly for Hawaiian as N161AA and Omni as N450AX, her current reg #, before being converted into a Super Tanker.

Enjoy the pics!

Is it me or is there - at the very end of the clip - what appears to be a Boeing 747-400 series being scrapped? If so, which aircraft is this?

Are you referring to the B747 in basic KLM colors that comes into full view about 20 seconds in? If so, I'd say yeah, she's well on her way to being scrapped....no doors, no landing gear, some windows cut out...she has a stretched upper deck, but no winglets...leading me to believe that this is a B747-300, or the winglets have been removed...
