Champaign Approach Feed?
« on: August 05, 2005, 11:33:11 PM »
Well, I got my new scanner today off of ebay for $65.  I bought a new one because I thought that something was wrong with my old one.  First of all the connector from the radio to the BNC connector always had a short so half the time it wouldn't work and you wouldn't even know it.  Also, there was a lot of static on the line, well it really wasn't static, I could hear like a radiostation playing in the background.  I didn't know if it was my antenna or what.  But once I got this new scanner, I'm so impressed!  I can pick up Champaign Approach, tower, and ground, and even Chicago Center.  Before I could never get Chicago Center.  I live about 10 miles from the airport, and I can even hear aircraft on the ground!  I've got a large discone antenna ontop of my 2 story home, and it does seem to do the job.

Anyways, I'm wondering if anyone is interested in me setting up a Champaign Approach Feed/Chicago Center.  Currently though I don't have a spare computer I could hook it up too, unless I use the one in the basement, but that's too far for the antenna.  If anyone has an old computer laying around and isn't being used, you could send it to me and I'll set up a Champaign Approach/Center feed.  Any comments are appreciated.

Absolutly. I have been wanting to listen the anything in the Chicago Area, whether it's ORD, or Chicago Center. Cyberair.com has been saying this -> "We are currently going under some modifications, please bare with us in the meantime here is the Chicago Approach and ground audio streams." So it's down most of the time and up very little. Put it simple, Hook it up.

Well for some reason now, I can't pick up Chicago Center anymore.  I'm wondering if they turned off a remote transmitter somewhere, or maybe they switched the frequencies around?  If somebody knows any frequencies they'd like me to try close to the Champaign area, just let me know.  I'm still going to try to get a Champaign Approach/Tower/Ground feed up as soon as I find an old computer.

Sure if Rick Weinberg was still alive he'd be all for it. But if you went to Cybil Phillips down at Pilot Training i'm sure she'd be open to the idea. They have a OC-3 at the airport for the Human Factors labs - doesn't take any bandwidth and you just patch it into the desktop PC at the signout counter.

If you could set up the Champaign Approach feed, that would be awesome.  That way we can hear ourselves get vectored out to Rantoul before landing! :D

Are you one of the flight school's students?  I hear them all the time, and it does get pretty with 20 some planes flying around Champaign plus other traffic.  I'm going to see what I can do, I don't really have a close computer I could run a feed off of besides my laptop, but it's not always here.  Maybe I'll see if I can get a long enough cable down into the basement, but my antenna is about 3 stories high and the computer is on the other side of the house.

Yep, sure am.  It does get pretty busy up there, but the controllers do a good job of getting us down in one piece.
If your setup doesn't work out, i've got a few ideas here that might work out.  Thanks.

I'd love to have Champaign approach on here.  I'm a native southern Illinoisan (Robinson) and would welcome that one for sure.

I sent the frequencies to Dave, but I've currently got it hooked up to my laptop, so it's not a permanent solution.  Champaign Approach comes in fairly nice, but my scanner puts out a hum for some reason.  Once it's posted, let me know how it sounds, and if you guys have any ideas how to reduce the hum I'd be sure to try it.

Personally I think it sounds great...incredibly clear...one of the clearest feeds available on the site.  Nice and close to where I am, so that makes it interesting for me.

Any center freqs in the area that pick up anything interesting?  Possibly ZID, ZAU or ZKC...they all border somewhere around there.

Thanks for putting the feed up!

Matt

Well, I can pick up Chicago Center on 135.75 and 121.275 I think it is at night only.  The controller doesn't always come in so I'm not sure if I should add them.  I've got a pretty large antenna pretty high up so I do have good reception of Champaign, do you have any frequencies I can try for ZID or ZKC?

Give these a try if you havent already:

124.3 (ZKC - 58 - Low)
134.025 (ZAU - RBS45 - High)
132.2 (ZID - HUF35 - Low)

And 135.75 is (DNV42 - Low) then 121.275 is (BVT46 - High)

I tried all of those frequencies, and the only ones I can pick up are 135.75 and 121.275.  The ATC is just barely audible.  Usually I can pick them up during the evening hours, but during the day, I can't get anything.
