I enjoy downloading archived mp3 files from LiveATC and listening to them later. A problem is that there are frequently long silences between transmissions. I had been using an older version of Audacity to manually go in and remove each segment of silence. This took a bit of time but it significantly reduced the listening time for the clip.
GOOD NEWS! The latest BETA version of Audacity has a new feature named "Truncate Silence", this will AUTOMATICALLY ELIMINATE LONG SILENT SEGMENTS from the clip. The remaining clip keeps the radio chatter with short silences between each transmission.
After downloading the clip to your hard disk, open it in the new Audacity. Under the "Effects" tab at the top is the new "Truncate Silence" option. There are a few settings to adjust the silence lengths ( NOTE: a millisecond is 1/1000 sec. for example: 5000ms = 5 seconds ). Click OK and the software goes through the file eliminating the long periods of silence. The resulting shorter clip can either be listened to in Audacity or saved.
