Can someone suggest a website with a Glossary of ATC terms?
« on: September 10, 2009, 08:49:51 AM »
From time to time I hear a word I don't know and would like to look it up.  Specifically, I hear the word "keeley" as in "maintain 170 knots to keeley" during final approach.

If anyone can suggest a good Glossary website, I'd appreciate it.

You'll find some of them here: http://www.studentflyingclub.com/air-terms.php

In your example, what you are probably  hearing is the controller asking the pilot to maintain 170 knots to the marker or beacon. They are given names which allow people to easily locate them on charts and navigation equipment.

Unfortunately there's more than one thing to reference.

For an "official" glossary of most aviation terms used in the U.S., try the Pilot/Controller Glossary: http://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/atpubs/PCG/pcg.pdf

As for NAVAIDs and intersections, try the Location Identifiers manual: http://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Order/LID.pdf (FYI this is a large PDF file... you should see it in print  :wink:)

And for contractions, try the Contractions Manual: http://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Order/CNT.pdf

For 'keely', this is an intersection.  You can use the Location Identifiers to look up it's lat/lon coordinates and see roughly where it's located at.  Something to remember is that all intersections are 5 characters in length and many of them are named after people, places, objects and states of mind (i.e. DRUNK intersection).  You'll find that a lot of them are also close to actual words or names that are larger than 5 characters. (i.e, NAMTH intersection, named after Joe Namath, and the intersection name is pronounced the same way as Joe's last name).

Hope this helps!

@atcman
The fix that the OP heard is probably KELEE not KEELY. (There's a feed for PHL, but not for LUK.)

Ah well, hearing it and spelling it is two different things.  :-P  That's also how we have fixes with the same names... just change the spelling!  But thanks for the info.  Merely, I was just trying to provide a few examples.

KEELY is a airspace fix near Cincinatti. I like to use either Airnav.com (http://www.airnav.com/airspace/fix/KEELY) or Skyvector.com to look up navaids and fixes.
