Can a frequency be added to one of the ZOA feeds?
« on: May 30, 2017, 09:53:22 AM »
Possibly ZOA 35, even if you can only hear the controller, or the airplanes, 134.55 is a center frequency that many aircraft coming south into the Bay Area use after having a hand off from ZLA. This would be great to have, almost complete coverage of California in the future. Thanks.

If it's possible, it would probably be best to add 134.550 to the "ZOA Oakland Center (11)" feed. Currently that feed is only monitoring 133.70 and is not that busy. I think it would also work if 127.450 was added to this feed as well, this is the sector above 133.70 that is not covered on LiveATC either. I think the 3 frequencies, 134.550, 133.700, 127.450, would work well on one radio and would complete coverage of that SW corner of ZOA (see attached map).

As 133.700 is already covered on the "ZOA Oakland Center (11)" feed, it would help if 133.700 was removed from the "ZOA Oakland Center (Fresno)" feed as it's overloaded with too many frequencies as it is, would help with frequency congestion on that radio.

Also it sounds like there is a priority mode set on the "ZOA Oakland Center (Fresno)" feed, any chance they can turn that off ? Very annoying as it keeps cutting out all transmissions every few seconds.

My 2 cents.

The zoa_11 feed now includes Sectors 13 and 14 as well as 11.

Thanks for doing that dave ! From what I have heard so far it sounds pretty good. Not too congested and good reception.

For sector coverage, as 133.70 is already covered on this feed any chance you can remove it from the Fresno feed and replace it with 121.250, ZOA22 the low sector north of Fresno, and also add 127.500 and 126.550, the "Joshua" frequencys for the High Desert TRACON to the east of Fresno ? (And get the priority function turned off).

I see this has been changed and the delay function has been turned off the Fresno feed. Thanks to who ever made the changes, sounds much better.

Sorry to be a pain but just thinking out loud here. ZOA coverage is excellent but there is still some overlap between some radios. I'm wondering if there is a way to maybe rationalize frequency selection to maximize sector coverage ?

For example you have 2 excellent feeds both with good controller reception monitoring 134.150, "ZOA Oakland 35" and "ZOA Oakland 35/40/41". If you removed 134.15 from the "ZOA Oakland 35/40/41" radio and replaced it with 119.975 and 134.975, the 2 high sectors to the north this would complement the low 40/41 sectors that feed SFO area arrivals and departures between low and high airspace to the north. "ZOA Oakland 35" is great as it is, with the military frequencies on there I don't think it should be changed.

Another example is 134.375 that is covered on both the "ZOA Oakland Center (Fresno)" feed and the "ZOA Oakland Center 32/34/44" feed. Reception of this frequency is weak on the Fresno feed and I'm wondering if it would be better to replace 134.375 with 121.250 (the low sector directly to the north of Fresno) on this radio ? "ZOA Oakland Center 32/34/44" works well as is, it's interesting to note that they cross-couple 132.950 with 119.750 a lot of the time, so even though 119.75 is not on the radio aircraft can be heard on it when the sectors are combined.

Some other ZOA observations.

ZOA coverage is excellent on the Reno feed but this radio is very congested with the Tower and NorCal frequencies. If there was ever a way to get more hardware in this location to split off 128.80 (low) and 134.450 (high) into a separate feed it would help greatly, should have good controller reception on 134.450. I'm always willing to donate funds to help.

I also notice they use 128.700, low sector 10, as the night shift primary frequency to the southwest, might consider adding this frequency to the "ZOA Oakland 11/12/14" radio as these 3 high frequencies are combined into 128.700 overnight. During the day I'm guessing it's not that busy so it probably wont overload the high sectors that are on it now and would give low sector coverage for that area.

The "O85 CTAF/KRDD Twr/ZOA" radio in Redding advertises 132.200, ZOA low sector 42. There is interference issues on this radio making it hard to hear a lot of traffic. Not sure if ZOA is on there or not ?

Overall coverage of ZOA is great on LiveATC, a few tweaks and a couple more radios and you would be close to at least partial coverage on all ZOA frequencies.

Thanks for that ! If it's not inconvenient any chance you could put up just 119.975 and 134.975 for just a day on that feed so I can check it out too ?

Cheers,

Only aircraft heard on 119.975 and 134.975. No ground controller. Even opening up the squelch no ground controller heard. I'm too far away.

Hope this helps?

Thanks for checking. I wasn't expecting you would be able to hear the controllers, the RCAG's for these two frequencies are well north of the San Francisco area. I was more interested in the aircraft reception, just wondering how far your aircraft reception range extended to the north ?

Your feed is great, it's just that 134.15 is already covered on another radio, I was just thinking for ZOA sector coverage remove 134.15 from your radio and add 119.97 and 134.97. Even without controller reception at least that area would be covered and as those 2 high sectors feed into and out of the 2 low sectors you have on there now the frequency selection would complement each other for a lot of the traffic. It was just a thought, no worries (I know some here are not keen on monitoring frequencies without controller reception).

Cheers,

JS

Thank you for providing feeds for us.

I will take just hearing aircraft it is better than having nothing at all.

ZOA 11/13/14 only has aircraft reception since the receiver is too far from the ZOA transmitters.

ZOA (Fresno) is working fine but has weak controller reception and good airplane reception.

Right now that is the best we can do.
