Saw messages today about a ground stop due to the ASR-9 (surveillance radar, used for local ops) radar being out at the airport.

The radar outage at Boston continues...they're running off the Center (ZBW) radar and radar separation has been increased from 3 miles to 5 miles.

Dave, it was built in 2001, right? I don't know when this was introduced but I would say ASR-11 since it is a fairly new facility. ASR-11 with STARS. Though I'm sure they told you it was ASR-9 when you visited, right Dave?

No, the FAA (in its automated status messages) is calling it ASR-9 for some reason, even though the news keeps referring to approach radar.  Regardless, the radar is out.  :-)

FYI - Official FAA Website called it at the time a "weather delay".

with STARS.

I have heard that other facilities with STARS have also had issues with "false targets"...
