Radar on 5mhz South Pacific feed
« on: May 27, 2010, 03:47:33 PM »
Hi All

The last day or so on the 5mhz airband i have been getting the over the horizon radar from around the china area comming thru on 5643mhz.
It can start as early as 0930utc and last allnight with upto s8 strength on the s-meter.
So if i hear the radar start i will leave the radio on 8867mhz over night, as the radar is basically continuous all night long on 5mhz.

Cheers from Jason

Jason, what is this radar you speak of?  I've not noticed any problems with 5643 recently.  Can you elaborate?

The signal is up and down parts of the hf spectrum.
It is has been found to be comming from the China sea area.
Has been heard when propagation is good towards asia , and has been around for about 4 years now.
I have the feed now on 5643 at 1010utc and it is there in the background, a rapid pulsing noise.
I will leave the feed on 5mhz over night.

Are you referring to that chugging noise?

Are there any recordings of this? I am curious to find out if it is similar to the "woodpecker" of years past.
