Boston area radios: Frequency suggestion
« on: September 07, 2007, 21:51:11 UTC »
FAO whoever is in charge of frequency selection,

This is just a suggestion.

Now that there are separate dedicated feeds for both the ZBW Gardner 36 and Concord 37 sectors (excellent feeds), and that both these frequencies are also covered on the "KORH & MA Area MilAir/Misc" radio, any chance you could take them off the "KORH & MA Area MilAir/Misc" radio and replace them with another ZBW sector ?

My suggestion would be to remove 123.750 and 134.700 and replace it with 133.425 the Bosox 47 sector. This would eliminate the redundancy and give you better overall sector coverage. The Bosox 47 RCAG in Woodstock appears it might be in range of ORH, so I'm guessing you might be able to hear the controller on 133.425 from ORH ?

Also the ZBW Boston Center (Low/East) radio is saturated with a lot of frequencies that are covered on other radios.

Low Altitude Sectors (below FL240):
Cape Sector (CAPE 18): 128.75 - covered on the Boston Center High (Atlantic) radio
Nantucket Sector (ACK 17 hi/log): 133.45 - covered on the Boston Center high (Atlantic) radio
Parso Sector (PARSO 16): 128.20
Gardner Sector (GDM 36): 123.750 - covered on the dedicated GDM 36 radio
Concord Sector (CON 37): 134.70 - covered on the dedicated CON 37 radio
Albany Sector (ALB 22): 121.35
BOSOX Sector (BOSOX 47): 133.425 - could be covered on the ORH radio
Providence Sector (PVD 34): 124.85
Chester Sector (CTR 07): 127.65
Canan Sector (CANAN 21): 132.65
Pawling Sector (PWL 06): 128.1 - covered on the BDR radio
Danbury Sector (DXR 19): 134.0 - covered on the BDR radio
Stewart Sector (SWF 05): 134.3

I'm not sure where this radio is located, but wouldn't it be better if it was dedicated to a specific area instead of loaded up with a lot of frequencies that are already covered on other radios ?

Again, just a suggestion. DJ

That would be me...will make some of these changes as soon as I can get to the receiver sites.  It'll be at least a week or two.

dave,

Thanks for the reply. If you can accommodate any more radios at the KORH location, or any other BOS area sites, I'd be happy to make a donation to cover the cost of a some more radios to split things up a bit more. DJ

The issue with that particular site is upstream bandwidth, or the lack of it.  It's a cable connection with 3 home users on it.  I don't want to push 8 whole streams out of there, even though I could - that would occupy 128kbps of their 256 or 384k upstream bandwidth and possibly make things noticeably slower for them.

I'll see what I can do.

Sounds like too much trouble, please don't worry about it if it's going to be a problem.

What about your ZBW Boston Center (Low/East) radio, is it located in the same location as the KORH radio ? On this radio it would help things out a lot if you could delete 123.750 (as it's presently covered on two other radios), this sector gets really busy at times and with good controller reception it ends up blocking out the other frequencies. I was thinking a dedicted radio scanning only 133.425 and 124.850 would be ideal, but if you can't do that at least take out all the other frequencies that are already covered on the other radios. Just a suggestion, and as I say I'll gladly donate the funds for more radios.

Better yet would be something like a PCR-100 that I could control remotely ! Name your price to set that up.

Cheers,

DJ

Though I'd throw a suggestion in. How about a NORTHEASTERN CENTER feed with 128.05,134.95,118.425,135.7,and 128.325(high wise) and 124.25,120.25, and 128.2(low wise)for those who like Atlantic Inbound flights to the US

The Low/East and KORH (and KBED) radios are located in the town of Harvard, MA on a fairly good sized hill.  There are 4 receivers there right now and I could probably add a 5th.  133.425 and 124.850 would be good on a dedicated receiver.  I would add 135.55 in there since that is the backup for the ZBW BOS sector and is used frequently.  I believe the transmitter for that is in Melrose, MA and is received very well at the Harvard and Sterling, MA receivers (both on hilltops).

I may be at the Harvard location next Saturday and will make the changes.

I started some of the Boston area changes by combining ZBW GDM 36 and CON 37 on the same radio.  One radio can scan between the two without too much blocking.

Feed is:
http://audio.liveatc.net:8012/zbw_gdm.m3u for the combined stream.

I now have the CON 37 stream radio scanning the BOS 47 and PVD 34 frequencies instead.  133.425 and 124.85
Feed is: http://audio.liveatc.net:8012/zbw_bos.m3u
The receiver site is too far away from the transmitter to hear the controllers.  Eventually we'll get a receiver closer to the MA/CT border or inside CT and cure that.

This feed also scans a backup frequency (135.55) which is used often as a backup to 133.425 and 124.85 - when it's in use the controllers come in very clearly from the transmitter in Melrose, MA.

Dave,

I had a listen this morning, those new frequency combos work very well. My standing offer to provide more radio still stands if you can accommodate any more. Thanks for the changes. DJ
