How come I only hear the controller, and not the pilots?

Something to do with the HF band.. ? - Tough exellent quality on the bits I DO hear ;)

Sometimes just depends on the atmospheric conditions. On HF if you are close to the transmitter, 100-200 miles, you usually wont hear it. HF is strictly, MOST of the time, long distance. Don't be surprized if you hear a plane that is 2K miles away, and not hear a controller 50 miles away, or vice versa.
